Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Botox™ (and then some)

futurederm icon
Botox™ is an increasingly common phenomenon in American society.  From celebrities to CEOs, supermodels to soccer moms, women to men, everybody is looking, well, a little less crinkly and a lot more smooth lately. Thankfully, lots of great information is available on Botox.  Here, I share everything I believe the savvy patient would want to know: There are seven different serotypes of Botox™. They are lettered A to G, with A being the most commonly used serotype as Botox (by Allergan), and B being used as Myobloc (by Ipsen Products). ... read more

Which to Choose: Skinceuticals CE Ferulic or Phloretin CF?

After a few days of using Skinceuticals’ new Phloretin CF instead of my beloved Skinceuticals CE Ferulic, I have come to a surprising decision on what works best: using both together! After speaking to a friend in the beauty business, it was suggested that perhaps Skinceuticals manufactured Phloretin CF without vitamin E so that CE Ferulic fans would buy Phloretin CF in addition to, rather than instead of, CE Ferulic. This logic also made since because my (normal, somewhat sensitive) skin felt awfully dry after three days’... read more

This Just In: Why Stress Destroys Your Skin

Although I’m only 23, I’ve noticed that stressful events make my skin look dull, thinner, and, well, just older.  But I was recently curious as to whether or not science stands behind my findings, or if stress just makes you think your skin is aging. Truth is, science verifies that stress accelerates skin’s rate of aging.  According to dermatologist Dr. Amy Weschler in this month’s Shape magazine, “The skin has its own endocrine system, and releases cortisol [a stress hormone] and endorphins [calming hormones]... read more

Product Review: Skin Scientifica T’Fivve Anti-Aging Eye Repair Serum

Being a beauty blogger has its perks: for one, you have to try lots of products!  Of course, being a beauty blogger also has its detriments: you have to try lots of products, and some of these products are not always good for my normal, but somewhat sensitive, skin. That’s why I was happy to come across the Skin Scientifica T’Fivve line, which claims to be “perfect for those who are ready for an anti-aging regimen, but are hesitant to use existing products because of skin sensitivity to traditional ingredients. Instead of... read more

Controversy: Why Natural Skin Care Isn’t Always Better

Recently, I have been receiving a lot of e-mails from women who are dedicated to only using products that are all-natural or completely free of chemical preservatives. From my reading, while I acknowledge that some ingredients, like sodium lauryl sulfate, are known to cause skin irritation in many patients, other ingredients, like parabens, have only been found to raise health concerns in the majority of patients only when used in concentrations much higher than normally found in skin care products. Many chemicals that are reported in... read more

Spotlight On: Lipomassage by Endermologie and Other Cellulite Treatments

Apparently, even some Victoria’s Secret models have cellulite. (But then again, who knows if this is Photoshopped anyway? ) With swimsuit season under way, cellulite treatments fly off the shelves. One dermatological procedure that is popular is Lipomassage by Endermologie. According to Dr. Leslie Baumann‘s textbook Cosmetic Dermatology, Endermologie entails the use of a handheld machine that “kneads” areas of a patient that are covered in a nylon stocking (usually buttocks, hips, stomach, thighs) for 35 to 45... read more

Product Review: M Lab Anti-Aging Day Treatment SPF 15

I’m all about high concentrations of potent ingredients in skin care formulations. So when I heard about M Lab products, formulated with “unprecedented levels — 45-74% — of clinically active ingredients,” I was pretty excited. It turns out there is both good news and a little bit of bad news. The good news is, of course, that there are lots of quality, well-researched ingredients, ranging from ceramide 2 to olive oil, from retinyl palmitate to vitamin C, which together comprise 45-74% of the composition of the... read more

Back again by popular demand, DUN DUN, it’s the return of the best of the beauty blogs this week!
