Perspectives from a future dermatologist

Dear FutureDerm…

I’d like to know your skincare regime. What do YOU use in the morning and night? Additional information on why you use your products is appreciated. Thanks -Ben

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your e-mail.  Here is my regime:

       Morning

  • Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser - a basic cleanser that many dermatologists love!
  • Skinceuticals Phloretin CF - with the new antioxidant that provides some sun protection, phloretin,
  • Skinceuticals CE Ferulic - used over Phloretin CF because Phloretin CF can be drying, and vitamins C and E are one of the most well-researched network antioxidant pairs, providing everything from additional sun protection to hyperpigmentation treatment to hydration
  • Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch SPF 85 Sunscreen - the most potent sun protection available

    Night

  • Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
  • Green Cream Level 6 - excellent retinol cream
  • Olay Regenerist Night Cream - an excellent source of niacinamide
  • Peter Thomas Roth Power K Eye Cream - the best eye cream I know of for my eyes, which are prone to dark circles from late nights studying, blogging, etc.

    Hope that this helped!

Please note that I will try to do my best to answer as many e-mails as I can, but as I currently receive between 10-20 each day, I cannot respond to every e-mail I receive.  I will try to respond to duplicate concerns on the blog!  :-)

  1. How many drops of the Phloretin and C, E, Ferulic do you use, and do you wait for a time after applying the Phloretin before you apply the C, E, Ferulic?

  2. I am wondering about the C E Ferulic–I have heard many great things about this product, but isn’t it in unstable packaging? From what I have gathered, ascorbic acid is unstable and easily oxidized; therefore, every time one opens the bottle, the serum is exposed to air and frequent openings turn the serum ineffective. Are there any other Vitamin C/E serums out there that are stable?

  3. You don’t seem to have any day moisturizer (unless Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch SPF 85 Sunscreen is a moisturiser/SPF). I find that I need to apply additional moisturizer over CE Ferulic as my skin feels taught without it.

  4. I was just researching the same thing as Zahra! I bought a sample pack of c e ferulic which arrived yellow in color (oxidized?) so I looked online for more info and found several sites discussing this issue. Here is a link to one I found very interesting. http://www.treatment-skincare.com/Skinceuticals/Serums/C-E-Ferulic/Samples-Discussion.html

  6. Very informative blog!!!!!

Can i ask is it possible to combine the use of retin a and vitamin c together (cos it seems u r using them separately)? And how old is it advisable before i start using vitamin c, retin a and all the “peptides” skincare? is it alright to start young? i’m currently using 20% vitamin c and 5% vitamin e cream with retin a 0.025% and i’m 28. No significant wrinkles, just fine lines ard the eyes and light laugh lines. Can u advise me?

  7. Nicki,

Have you tried the SkinCeuticals retinol products? I currently use the 0.5 cream in the evenings and have seen a slight reduction in developing wrinkles. Do you find the Green Cream products superior to SkinCeuticals when it comes to retinol?

    Thanks!
