Kim Raver is a celebrity endorsement for the 2009 Skin Cancer Takes Friends Program.
Each year, over 59,000 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the United States alone, according to 2007 estimates from the American Cancer Society. While melanoma exhibits an impressive 99% localized 5-year survival rate and a 91% overall 5-year survival rate, there are still over 8,000 deaths each year resulting from skin cancer, and the American Cancer Society believes that over 1 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer each year may be related to sun exposure.
As such, unprotected sun exposure poses a major risk to your health. Luckily, early detection can save your life, as skin cancer detected in its earliest stages has a survival rate of nearly 100 percent. For that reason, I’m so pleased to say that Olay and the American Society for Dermatological Surgery have teamed up to offer free skin cancer screenings through the Skin Cancer Takes Friends Program. In 2008, more than 300 dermatologic surgeons in 200 cities across 45 states performed over 9,000 free screenings.
