Nowadays, everywhere you look, women are batting impressive pairs of eyelashes. Indeed, “eyelashes are the new breasts,” says a friend, “…everyone is looking for a bigger, better pair.”
With all of the glamorous eye fringe flapping around town, there are naturally more and more products on the shelves, each promising that they are the miracle product creating all the beautiful lashes. But what is the real cause of the eyelash surge? FutureDerm investigates…
Suspect #1: Latisse
Photo source: Latisse_Logo, Originally uploaded by Dr_Alan_Bauman
Latisse is a prescription-only treatment formulated with a prostaglanoid called bimatoprost that is clinically proven in a number of reputable studies to increase eyelash growth. In one published FDA-reviewed clinical trial, approximately 140 volunteers’ eyelashes typically grew 25 percent longer, 106 percent thicker and 18 percent darker with Latisse (bimatoprost) than those in the non-treatment (control) group. According to the New York Times, only 3.6 percent of patients in the Allergan study experienced eye itching and red eyes, and none had a change of eye color. However, according to Dr. Howard Kaplan, M.D., “[A change in eye color/deposition of brown pigment] is a potential side effect of using Latisse, [though] it is not a common one. Because it’s possible for this side effect to occur, it’s important to weigh the potential risks and benefits of using the product with your physician.” Indeed, the change in eye color that occurs is likely to be permanent, and speaking to your physician is a must, particularly if you have light-colored eyes. Other potential risks include a very slight increased risk of glaucoma, although the FDA designated the active ingredient in Latisse (lumigan, a prostaglandin analog) as perfectly safe and unlikely to cause glaucoma (a concern again put to rest in Expert Opinion on Drug Safety).
Sold for an average $120.00 for a one-month supply, Allergan Latisse is anticipated by some reports to generate over $500 million by March 2010. With fast and impressive results, as well as celebrity endorsements by Brooke Shields and reported use by Jenny McCarthy, the popularity of Latisse is likely to grow even more within the next few years.
Likely to work? 10/10
Suspect #2: Jan Marini Eyelash Conditioner
For those who are concerned about changing their eye color or contracting glaucoma, Marini Lash provides a prostaglandin-free alternative (that is, after 2008, when latanoprost was removed from the products). Jan Marini, president and CEO of Jan Marini Skin Research, sums up the charm of her reformulated namesake eyelash serum best: “With Marini Lash, anyone can have thicker and lusher-appearing lashes without the substantial cost or warning labels that accompany the Latisse prescription product…Neither Marini Lash nor its companion product, Marini Mascara™ Performance Mascara, contain the glaucoma drug in Latisse…”
Instead, the active ingredients in Marini Lash are the peptides, which are believed to stimulate hair growth at the follicle, according to Dermatologic Clinics. Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17 and Myristoyl Pentapeptide-12, the peptides in Marini Lash, have not specifically been documented to stimulate hair growth in any peer-reviewed, published, independent studies; however, reported in-house studies at Jan Marini Skin Research, Inc. document that these peptides are effective.
Despite the lack of mention of Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17 and Myristoyl Pentapeptide-12 in peer-reviewed scientific journals, I still like Marini Lash. After the company sent me a vial of this product and I used it nightly for four weeks, my lashes grew about 20-25% longer! Other bloggers also provide glowing reviews, like Beauty Girl Musings (with impressive photos) and The Wall Street Journal Health Blog, although some reviewers do not note a change.
Ingredients in Marini Lash (2008-present): Water (Aqua), Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans, Diazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Proplyparaben, C12-C15 Alkyl Benzoate, Panthenol, Acrylates/C10-C30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, Myristoyl Tetrapeptide-12, Linoleic Acid, Linolenic Acid, Tocopherol, Biotin, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Leaf Extract, Aesculus Hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut) Seed Extract, Cinnamomum Zeylanicum (Cinnamon) Bark Extract, Butylene Glycol, Saccharomyces/Copper Ferment, Sodium Phosphate Dibasic, Sodium Chloride, Triethanolamine, Vitamin B-12, Folic Acid.
Suspect #3: Peter Thomas Roth Lashes to Die For
The secret to Peter Thomas Roth Lashes to Die For ($72.50, Amazon.com)? Vitamins, namely A, C, E, and Pro-Vitamin B5. According to the text Chemical and Physical Behavior of Human Hair, “much remains to be discovered about growth factors such as vitamins…and their effects on hair growth and development.”
In 4-8 week independent consumer studies of Peter Thomas Roth Lashes to Die For, lashes appeared softer in 80%, fuller in 67%, and enhanced overall in 70% of cases. However, marks of approval from consumer studies fail to impress me as much as actual measurements of growth, as approximately 1/3 of consumers will report a positive effect even when using a placebo.
Customer reviews of the product appear to be mixed. While some have had positive experiences, like my friend Nancy at Beauty411, others do not experience any effect in growth at all. (Overall: about 60% positive reviews). I personally would be interested to see if consumers that exhibit eyelash growth also take a multi-vitamin. It would be my guess that maximal effect of this product would take place in patients who have some sort of a vitamin deficiency – but then again, until we better understand the role of vitamins in hair growth physiology, who knows?
Ingredients in Peter Thomas Roth Lashes to Die For: Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Panthenol, Retinyl Palmitate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Phospholipids, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate Cyclodextrin N-[2-Hydroxy-1-Hydroxymethyl)Ethyl]-9-Oxo-11.Alpha.,15s-Dihydroxy-17-Phenyl-18,19,20-Trinor-Prosta-5z,13e-Dien-1-Amide, Triethanolamine, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Alcohol.
Likely to work: 7.0/10
Suspect #4: Revitalash
Once upon a time, before a company (Allergan) wanted the FDA to investigate the use of bimatoprost in a prescription for eyelash growth, there was a prostaglanoid called latanoprost in an over-the-counter product Revitalash ($67.95, Amazon.com). And Revitalash was strong and had its risks, but was deemed low enough in latanoprost to remain available without a prescription.
The risks with Revitalash are the same as Latisse, because latanoprost and bimatoprost are both prostaglanoids: mainly, increased intraocular pressure (i.e., increased risk of glaucoma, though slight with the concentration of prostaglanoids used in the products) and a change in eye color.
Of course, the latanoprost in Revitalash works in the same fashion as the bimatoprost in Latisse, as both are prostaglandin derivates. However, because the active ingredient in Revitalash is low enough in concentration to not require a prescription, Revitalash is likely to be both slightly safer and less effective than Latisse. I think of Revitalash as training wheels for anyone who is considering Latisse. At any rate, be sure to ask your physician before starting use of Revitalash.
Ingredients in Revitalash: Purified Deionized Water, Sodium Chloride, Panthenol (Provitamin B-5), Citric Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Disodium Phosphate, (Z)-7-[(1R,2R,3R,5S)-3,5-Dihydroxy-2-(R,E)-3-hydroxy-4(3- trifluoromethyl)phenoxy)but-1-enyl)cyclopentyl]-5-Nethylheptenamide, Cellulose Gum
Likely to work? 9.5/10
Suspect #5: Enormous Lash
Enormous Lash ($95.00, Amazon.com) used to contain prostaglandins, but has since been reformulated to contain vitamin B5 (like Peter Thomas Roth Lashes to Die For) and peptides (like Marini Lash, although different peptides).
As with the rest of the non-prostaglandin eyelash growth serums, the reviews remain to be mixed of Enormous Lash (about 60% positive reviews), with many of the positive reviews having been conducted before the product was reformulated. Still, there is something to be said for a product with both peptides and vitamins, and even though the research behind this specific formulation is limited, it may be worth a try, particularly if you are afraid of using products containing prostaglandins.
Ingredients in Enormous Lash: Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerine, Potassium Olivoyl PCA, Arginine, Alanyk Glutamine, Saccharomyces/Copper Ferment, Phospholipids, Sphingolipids, Panthenol, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Isopentyl glycol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Trisoium EDTA.
Likely to work: 7.5/10
The Bottom Line
No matter which eyelash serum you choose, your lashes will grow only to their previous length when you discontinue use of the product. With that said, you can always try different products and experiment which works best for you in a timespan of 1-2 months.
The truth of the matter is, products with prostaglandins, such as Latisse and Revitalash, seem to be the most likely to increase the growth of your lashes in the shortest amount of time. However, due to the possible risks involved, many choose other excellent eyelash growth serums, such as peptide-rich Marini Lash.
The best option is to talk to your physician and/or ophthalmologist about your concerns, and together you can determine if you are a candidate for prostaglandin derivates, or if vitamins or peptides would be a better option for you.

here’s another suspect i use and love…rapidlash…runs about fifty bucks, sometimes you can find deals on ebay or amazon(found one for a little under thirty one dollars). the first four weeks i didn’t notice anything other than a more healthy appearance of the lashes, but, i kid you not, after the four week period it was like they grew overnight. i’ve always had generous lashes for a guy, but now they’re insane…i get asked if i am wearing eyeliner(nope). in fact, i went back to a barbershop i hadn’t been to in a while and a woman who had cut my hair before took care of me again, she really went crazy over my eyelashes, even having a couple of the other ladies come over to see. she said that not only were they long, they were thick and dark…needless to say i was slightly embarrassed to admit i was using rapidlash, i just told her it ran in the family….
here’s the ingredient list per amazon:
Water (Aqua), Rhizobian Gum, Sodium Hyaluronate, Butylene Glycol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Biotin, Panthenol, Pantethine, Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans, Allantoin, Cucurbita, Pepo (Pumpkin) Seed Extract, Sea Water, Dipotassium, Glycyrrizate, Alcohol Denat (and) Isopropyl Cloprostenate, Octapeptide-2, Copper Tripeptide-1, Glycerin, Glycine Soja (Soybean Oil), Phosphatidylcholine, Polypeptide-23, Phenoxyethylene, Chlorphenisen, Sorbic Acid
i must say i love this product and the pricing!
[...] FutureDerm sheds some light on eyelash growth treatments – FutureDerm [...]
I saw a very real need to design, produce and sell this product after hearing of all the side effects from drug/prostaglandin product users on internet cosmetic chat room forums. These folks were paying very high prices for products that produced some rather serious side effects. Before I get into a detailed description of my product, let me list the known side effects when using products that contain the drug “Lumigan”/Bimatoprost and prostaglandin type actives.
1) Eye color change, to a darker color which cannot be reversed
Drug active products REQUIRE a prescription to obtain, possess and use. This requires expensive doctor visits just to obtain the prescription. Ordering from “overseas” without the prescription is ILLEGAL, and the DEA can and will arrest users who have these products without a prescription.
2) Red eyes, and/or redness around the eyelid area
3) Severe eye irritation on use of the product
4) Eyelash shedding and falling out
5) “spidery” eyelash growth, eyelashes that are not straight, that curl or bend in odd directions
6) Hairs growing in places on or near the eyes where hair should not grow
7) Blurred Vision
9) Ordering a “drug” product from overseas, sight unseen, can result in products that are tampered with, not strong enough, contaminated, and/or potentially harmful to the user’s health.
Now, this list is not something I made up to make my product sound better. The list of side effects is well known to the makers of the drug active, and THEY even have to include this list with every product sold, since it is a drug product.
After learning about these problems, and the problems that users of these products have had, that convinced me to make my product, which is a cosmetic product and NOT a drug product.
Moisturizing Eyelash Growth Serum
This product is state-of-the-art in that it does not contain a “drug” active, it has no side effects, no irritation, yet it creates healthy eyelash growth. The active ingredient is a cosmetic approved “peptide”. Essentially, this product will make ALL other eyelash growth products on the market today…obsolete. And, I have priced it lower than all the other products on the market which will also be the death knell of those expensive drug products especially in today’s economy.
Description:
This eyelash growth serum with botanical derived actives has been designed to stimulate growth of eyelashes. It contains a state-of-the-art peptide called Sympeptide 226 (Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, from Symrise) which signals the eyelashes to grow longer and fuller. The serum is fortified with botanical actives that are jojoba and macadamia based. This not only ensures that the active ingredient will be driven into the skin where it will work effectively, but also provides long term moisturization of the skin when coupled with sodium hyaluronate. And moisturized skin is healthy skin which sustains the eyelash growth.
Mechanism of Action:
The clinically tested, state-of-the-art peptide technology Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17 signals the skin to grow eyelashes. No pharmaceutical grade materials are used in this product, and therefore no undesirable “side effects” can occur as with other eyelash growth products, drug or cosmetic. With continued use of this serum the eyelashes become longer and fuller. The approximate time period to see growth is after 2 to 3 weeks of continued use. A macadamia ingredient helps to not only drive the peptide into the skin, but also to be compatible with the skin with a desirable fatty acid profile similar to that of the skin’s own natural moisturizing sebum. Sodium hyaluronate and hydrolyzed jojoba esters also ensure long term moisturization which is essential for good skin health of the eyelid, which leads to excellent and continuous eyelash growth.
Use:
This eyelash growth serum can be used any time the user feels like it. However, it is recommended to be used on a daily basis (at least twice a day), and most certainly each night (overnight) to see consistent results. Carefully use the eyeliner brush to apply a small amount of the product just above your upper and lower eyelashes, slightly touching them at the root area. It is not necessary to overload the product on the lashes, just a light coating is sufficient. Avoid contact with the eye itself, although there are no ingredients in the product that will cause eye irritation. Always gently clean the applicator brush with mild soap and water, and rinse clean and dry for the next use.
The following independent user comments are from the “Lash Growth Enhancing Products” thread here on the EDS forum:

“I have to update I recently saw pictures after 6 months of use with NOTCH lash serum and WOW! The difference between before and after is nothing short of amazing, I am getting incredible results myself and I haven’t even used it for 3 months! On top of that I just never had time to use it twice a day! I just love this product, and for me anything I can use around my eyes is miraculous! If mine keep growing at this rate it’s either contacts or I will have to start trimming my lashes!”
“I am happy to report that the Eyelash Growth Serum is working! I have been using it once per day, at night, for about 2 months now. I noticed a huge growth spurt about 2 or 3 weeks ago. Lashes are wayyyyy longer, fuller. It is comparable to Latisse but without risk. I will DEFINITELY repurchase. Thanks, John Hill, for a superior product, reasonably priced, that does what it says it will!”
“Hello All, To answer I just posted on another thread about Never Over The Hill products. Here goes, The lash serum is working for me, finally had a chance to use it regularlly for a month now. I am seeing added length, thickness and a nice glossy condition! For me a biggie is NO IRRITATION! My eyes tend to tear very easily and get red from a lot of products anywhere near my eyes. The results might not be as drastic as those using Lumigan or one of the prostaglandin analogues, but then again it has just been one month! I also don’t have any side effects like wild lashes growing in odd directions, or hair appearing where it isn’t wanted! This is a definite re-purchase for me!”
“Just a quick update the results just keep getting better and better! I found my perfect lash serum with Never Over The Hill! My lashes look like they did at 13 long, thick, glossy and conditioned! I will never be without this fantastic product!”
“I only use it at night, but you could easily use it in the day as well! My lashes are hitting my glasses now!”

This is very interesting, and not at all unexpected!
Recently, three people on another cosmetic chat room/forum have mentioned something that my “Moisturizing Eyelash Growth Serum”, the E.Y.E.S. system, is doing for them other than simply causing eyelash growth. These people all have suffered from “dry eyes”. However, since using the E.Y.E.S. product, they have each independently noticed that they no longer have dry eyes! Now that is interesting! I know this is not something that a cosmetic product can advertise as being used for relief. But…. if these people want to publicly talk about that, no there is no harm, no foul!
Take a moment and read these latest three comments (in the order posted) on the Never Over the Hill Moisturising eyelash growth serum thread from the EDS (Essential Day Spa) forum:
I’ve been using the serum for about two weeks now, no noticeable growth yet. However, I am noticing that my dry eye syndrome seems to be not as bad. Usually, I have to use eye drops all day long because my eyes get very sore and gritty. Since I’ve been using this serum I’ve only been putting in the drops morning and evening. So what I’m saying is that the serum seems to be soothing my eyes – am I delusional I wonder?
That’s interesting K, I have also noticed that my severely dry eyes are much less dry in the last couple of months. I know the serum is not drying out my eyes, but I hadn’t considered the fact that it might be somewhat lubricating my eyes. I had been attributing the lack of dryness to my reduced use of Retin A this winter. You may be right though! BTW, I am still seeing growth with mostly just one application a day. Mind you it is not the dramatic growth I had when I used the old version of Revitalash or Enormous Lash, but it is definitely GROWTH! I do see some lighter colored hairs…that is the only unusal side note.
I have noticed the same thing, I have used it since the 1st of January, twice a day for 2 weeks and then once a day, I also used 1000 hour lash color in blue/black and it made the lashes look so much better, but now I only use my eye drops once in the morning instead of 5 times a day.
We already know that the E.Y.E.S. system grows lashes. We also know that it contains no drug active ingredient, and therefore has no potentially harmful side effects like the Prostaglandin/Lumigan products. So, if the E.Y.E.S. system also alleviates “dry eye syndrome” at the same time….. that would make for a truly fantastic product. I am not surprised at these observations. The naturally derived moisturizing emollients that I formulated in this product could well be the reason for the dry eye relief.
I’ll keep you all informed as more observations and comments come in to me.
