Move over, Ped Egg – Emjoi Micro-Pedi ($39.95) is the new pedicure tool in town. Designed with a unique electronic microroller that moves at an impressive 30 rotations/second, the Emjoi Micro-Pedi sold 10,000 units in its first thirty minutes on QVC in the U.K., and has been a best-seller in the country for about a year: ”UK consumers reacted with prodigious enthusiasm,” says Tim Farrell, National Sales Manager for Emjoi. ”We already knew we had a great product, but that confirmed it. Now we are confident American consumers will be jsut as keen to get their hands on a unique item that can make their lives so much easier and is cost efficient versus spa treatments.”
The Emjoi Micro-Pedi premiered in the U.S. just three weeks ago, and I was one of the beauty bloggers selected to try it (yay!). The bad news is that the Emjoi Micro-Pedi will not remove calluses permanently. Calluses are thickened areas of skin the body naturally produces in a means of protection against repeated pressure, such as tight shoes, high heels, etc. The only way to permanently remove calluses is to have them shaved off, preferably by a dermatologist, and to remove the source of strain indefinitely (and who wants to give up their high heels for that long?)
The good news is the Emjoi Micro-Pedi will remove calluses temporarily, and better than any pumice stone. This is because the Emjoi Micro-Pedi is essentially a motorized pumice stone: the magenta roller is a coarse pumice, whereas the blue roller is an extra coarse pumice (both are included). For the best results, soak your feet in soapy water for 10-15 minutes beforehand. Dry your feet, and gently rub the Emjoi over your calluses. Do not file the callus down completely; leave a thin layer of the callus behind, so as to prevent potentially breaking the skin. Use a hydrating lotion next – I love AmLactin XL – and wear cotton socks before bed. Finally, and this is crucial, make sure you change your shoes, or else expect to repeat this process weekly or bi-weekly.
Bottom Line
I’m currently a full-time medical student and beauty blogger (and girlfriend and daughter and friend), so like everyone else, I’m always in search of a way to save a few minutes. The Emjoi Micro-Pedi is like the pumice stone of the 21st century – the same effect, just a whole lot faster. If you’re really pressed for time, keep it right outside of the shower – as soon as you get out, dry your feet, and whip-whip, callus-free feet. Awesome! :-)
