Bumble & Bumble Dry Hair Powder sounds like a working girl’s dream come true: One spray, and you get the benefits of a dry shampoo and a hair color!
Except you don’t. I recently tried Bumble & Bumble Dry Hair Powder in an effort to cover my highlights, which have grown out about four or five inches:
Unfortunately, I didn’t check the ingredients before I used Bumble & Bumble Dry Hair Powder, and so I was completely shocked when the color not only didn’t last, but went everywhere - all over my neck, the sides of my face, even the top of my shirt.
After I read the ingredients, I wasn’t surprised: Two alcohols, plus aluminum starch octenylsuccinate, which is used in cosmetics at concentrations as high as 30% as an anticaking agent and a nonaqueous viscosity increasing agent. While aluminum starch octenylsuccinate has been found to be safe in toxicity studies (International Journal of Toxicity, 2002), it does not absorb oil to the extent that it will stick to oils in the hair for very long. Instead, Bumble & Bumble Dry Hair Powder has Vp/Va Copolymer (also known as Polyvinylpyrrolidone/Vinyl Acetate Copolymer) to cause the powder to stick to the hair. Unfortunately, Vp/Va Copolymer is mostly found in products like hair sprays and leave-in conditioners, not temporary hair dyes.
So if you want to use Bumble & Bumble Dry Hair Powder, do yourself (and your white shirts) a favor, and use only a very small amount on the roots of your hair. I personally will never, ever use this again!
