When I first received the opportunity to try pixi Line Relax Serum, I was excited. Who wouldn’t want to try a new serum that supposedly relaxes facial muscles and minimizes lines? Even women in their teens and twenties aren’t turned off by “anti-aging” claims nowadays! Unfortunately:
There’s nothing in it to relax the muscles
Um, yes, unfortunately, you read that right. Unlike many other “line relaxing” creams or serums, pixi Line Relax Serum does not contain any ingredients proven to relax the muscles when applied topically. The most popular of these ingredients found in other skin care products is GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter. However, even with GABA, the nerve inhibition is temporary when applied topically, and the effect varies from woman to woman. Furthermore, the effect is not usually anywhere comparable to Botox or other professionally-administered wrinkle reducers. Yet while other creams have some business claiming to relax the muscles, pixi Line Relax Serum has no GABA, nor does it have any other ingredients that have been proven to relax the muscles. Instead, what I think pixi is getting at is that two of the peptides (acetyl tetrapeptide-5 and acetyl hexapeptide- 8) will increase collagen production over time, “filling in” fine lines and wrinkles.
pixi Line Relax Serum is different from a lot of other primers because its second-highest ingredient, glyceryl polymethacrylate, is usually found in skin care gels, not primers. Glyceryl polymethacrylate has a very high water absorbing capacity, so it is often used to hydrate and help maintain skin’s integrity and resistance. In pixi Line Relax Serum, glyceryl polymethacrylate leads to a thinner, lighter consistency than most dimethicone-only primers. It dries completely, feeling slightly soft and smooth on the skin, and not at all greasy. On the downside, glyceryl polymethacrylate is so thin that it is not as effective at filling in small lines and wrinkles as well as dimethicone or other silicone-based ingredients.
Soothing and Calming to the Skin
pixi Line Relax Serum contains effective concentrations of aloe vera and witch hazel, both of which have been proven to be soothing and calming to the skin. Aloe vera has been a popular folk remedy since the 1930’s, during which time it was used primarily to be soothing for sunburns and cuts. Aloe vera’s efficacy as an anti-inflammatory ingredient was verified in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology. On the other hand, witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) contains tannins that act as natural astringents, drying out oozing or bleeding wounds (Archives of Dermatology). Witch hazel is also cited inComplimentary Therapies in Medicine to have anti-inflammatory properties.
Bottom Line: Best Suited to Women Under 40
You read that right. Despite its name, pixi Line Relax Serum has a light, non-filling consistency that is best for women without fine lines and wrinkles. Overall, it’s a great primer for younger women: it dries quickly, absorbs well, is anti-inflammatory, and feels soft and smooth. I also like the fact that it includes peptides that are proven to stimulate collagen production when they are used over time, which gives the serum a “preventative anti-aging” aspect as well. So pixi Line Relax Serum is a great primer, just not for “relaxing” or even concealing existing wrinkles. I give this one a 9/10 for women without fine lines and wrinkles and a 6/10 for women with more advanced concerns!
