Beat the Summer Heat and Seal in Your Makeup: Mally Beauty Evercolor Poreless Face Defender Product Review

Mally Beauty Evercolor Poreless Face Defender is for use in place of translucent powder. Just apply to your foundation afterwards and it will ‘set” it. Pretty neat, but only desirable for dry to normal/dry skin types!

It is 96 degrees right now in Pittsburgh.  Stepping outside my office at lunch hour, I swear, the hot air melted my makeup off in minutes (and also dissolved my dreams of being able to meet my boyfriend tonight straight from the office, *le sigh*).

Researching products, I came across the new Mally Beauty Face Defender ($38.00, Amazon.com).  Developed by celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal, the Mally Beauty Face Defender can be pressed into skin on top of any type of makeup (long-wear or otherwise).  The clear setting gel mattifies and invisibly seals everything in place—for upward of 20 hours. “It does everything translucent powder wishes it could,” she says to Vogue. “Powder gets in creases and sits in lines; this smoothes them.”

The FutureDerm Take

Silicone caulk can be used as a basic sealant ...

Silicone caulk – don’t worry, not the same as silicones in your cosmetics. Mally’s product is 5 silicones and silica, which together dry to “seal in” your makeup.

There are only six ingredients in the product – five silicones and silica.  The major one?  Polymethylsilsesquioxane.  In a study done by Grant Inc., a company responsible for cosmetic development, polymethylsilsesquioxane is responsible for lubrication, water repellancy, anti-caking and slip properties in skin care and cosmetics.  So when Mally Beauty Face Defender dries, it will in fact “seal in” your makeup.

Still, with its ingredients, Mally Beauty Face Defender is very similar to a silica based primer.  Which means two things for skin care fanatics:  One, it’s better for dry and normal/dry skin types.  Adding another layer of silicones onto oily skin covered in foundation/powder sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen – particularly in the summer.

Two, Mally Beauty Evercolor Poreless Face Defender will not do anything to help pore size, despite the name.  There are agents proven to help pore size, but silicones are not one of them.  [For more, read How Can I Make My Pores Look Smaller?]  Instead, the name comes from the fact that the product leaves your face feeling smoother and softer, as though your skin was baby-new, free of pores and blemishes.

Can This Product Hurt My Skin?

cosmetics

The product won’t hurt your skin if used properly, but you may need to buy more makeup sponges. Unlike the compact shown here, the sponge sold with Mally Beauty Evercolor Poreless Face Defender doesn’t fit in the case. (Photo credit: jennyankenbauer)

No, not unless you apply way too much of it and don’t wash it off at night.  The unique molecular structure of silicones (larger molecules with wider spaces between each molecule) allow them to form a breathable barrier and also explains why silicones rarely feel heavy or occlusive, although they offer protection against moisture loss (The Chemistry and Manufacture of Cosmetics, 2002).

Bottom Line

If you have dry to normal/dry skin and are looking for a way to seal in your makeup, Mally Beauty Face Defender is a creative way to do so.  Just apply in place of powder and your makeup is set better!

Wow, this DOES really pique my curiosity !!!! I have normal to dry skin, and powder does not entirely satisfy me.
But could this product make me break out ???

    Thanks, Moïra

I have been using this for several months now and feel very positive about it. I have EXTREMELY oily skin and after using a blotting sheet, this product works quite well to mattify for a nice amount of time. It’s head-&-shoulders above adding a layer of nasty powder which, on extremely oily skin has very little prolonged impact.
