Product Review: Maybelline Master Shape Brown Pencil

By Natalie Bell — September 18, 2012

Maybelline-brow-corrector Maybelline Master Shape Brown Pencil ($7.49, amazon.com) fills in and corrects brows that might be a little patchy. It’s a waxy formula that goes on easily and looks natural on brows. Though it’s not necessarily the best for brows like mine, which involve coloring in almost the entire brow, it’s a great product for filling in brows.

Color: 3.5/5, Pigmentation: 3/5

I used Maybelline Master Shape Brown Pencil 265 Auburn, which matched the slight reddish tint of my hair without looking too red (as brow correctors often do). It’s definitely multipurpose for both redheads and those with something a little more chestnut. There are only four colors, which make the color selection a little limited, but brow pencils tend to work for a wide range of people, so it’s not quite as bad as if it had been, say, foundation.

The pigmentation is pretty light. This would work really well for someone who has some filling in to do.  It’s not the best formula I’ve used to totally overhaul eyebrows (that distinction goes to Anastasia Brow Power Duo), but it definitely has a nice subtle look to it.

Durability: 4/5

Maybelline Master Shape Brown Pencil lasts pretty well throughout the day. It’s a wax formula, so it sticks onto hair and skin pretty well. As far as durability of the actual stick — I’m not so sure. Maybelline says you can sharpen it, but it’s plastic and that seems tough to do with a traditional pencil sharpener.

Application: 5/5

Maybelline Master Shape Brown Pencil was super easy to apply. The directions say to fill in your brows with little pencil strokes that go along with your natural brows and then to use the brush to blend it in by brushing up and out. Take note, the brush step is crucial for really getting everything to look blended and even.

Ingredients

PPG-2 Myristyl Ether Propionate, Ricinus Communis Oil/Castor Seed Oil, Copernicia Cerifera Cera/Carnauba Wax/Cire De Carnauba, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Synthetic Beeswax, Ceresin, Ethylene/VA Copolymer, Cera Alba/Beeswax/Cire Dabeille, Silica, Tocopherol. May Contain: CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499/Iron Oxides, CI 77891/Titanium Dioxide.

Bottom Line

Maybelline Master Shape Brown Pencil is a great brow pencil for someone who needs to fill in those little extra patches on eyebrows, and is particularly easy for those first-time users. It’s better than other pencils I’ve used, perhaps due to the wax. It glides on smooth and the colors seem formulated to work with a variety of hair colors and skin tones. It’s not the absolutely best for totally fixing eyebrows if, like mine, you want them to match your hair color. I also think the plastic pencil that you’re supposed to sharpen might be somewhat difficult.

Product Rating: 7.5/10
