My birthday is on November 19. Which means, each year my birthday falls on a Monday, I get a three-day week.
Talk about spoiled! And I’ve definitely enjoyed the time. While I’m still working, my friends have been wonderful. My coworkers here at FutureDerm surprised me by coming in with a beautiful bouquet of flowers, cheesecake, Godiva chocolate and a box of hot chocolate. Which would have been amazing enough, except they walked in with “Happy Birthday” playing on an iPhone. So thoughtful!
My friends were wonderful as well. My friend Robin, an incredible cake conneisseur, made me a FutureDerm Retinol cake (see above). My cousin got me a Gilt gift card, my parents got me clothes, and my boyfriend took me to Washington D.C. for a mini-shopping spree.
I’m not saying all of this as a “Oooh lookit all the stuff I got!” kind-of post, and I apologize if it is coming across that way. But rather, I wanted to publicly note my gratitude for all of the wonderful things my friends and family have done for me.
Sometimes in our society I think we tend to focus too much on all of the things that are wrong. The mass media capitalizes on people’s innate fears, but in reality, we have it so good. Just two years ago, I was going through a really difficult time in my own personal life, and now, looking back on it, I’m a much better person afterwards and have such a better perspective on life.
I wish the media would focus more on telling people what is possible for them in a society as free and advanced as ours. Anything about your life you want to change, you can find books and DVDs and audio CDs that can teach you the skills and mindset you need to get there. Sometimes these may seem a little hokey, maybe even a bit scheme-heavy – especially if you’re looking for methods to earn more money or to lose weight. But, at the same time, keep looking – the great resources are out there!
Even better, in a free society, you can contact anyone you want to ask for advice. One of my favorite bits of advice I’ve learned is to offer to take someone with the job or skills or even wealth level you desire to dinner. You’d be surprised at the high-level CEOs and expert writers and fitness professionals who are willing to sit down with someone who is interested in what they have to say. If that seems too uncomfortable for you, it also helps to sign up for groups. I started taking adult ballet recently, and it’s changed my life – the instructor in particular is so health-conscious and thin that it makes me think twice about scoffing down another 100-calorie pack.
My point is this: At 28, I’m learning to focus on the positive. Yes, you do need to stay informed to an extent, but given my line of work, a quick scan of the Huffington post 2-3 times a week is enough. I’m all for compassion, but don’t stay dismayed for too long. Find ways to help and be proactive about finding the resources you need to make the changes you desire in your life. It’s well-worth it at the end of the day!
