How Mascara Works — and Why DiorShow Is Consistently the Best

DiorShow Mascara

Believe it or not, there is a science to mascara. One of my favorite mascaras of all time, DiorShow Black Out Mascara ($25, FutureDerm.com) is a terrific mascara with two components backed by the best of cosmetic science: First, a large, rubbery, long-bristled brush, which maximizes each and every lash. Second, its water-soluble, waxy, smooth formulation binds to each lash, voluminizing instantly, while gently lengthening with each stroke.

DiorShow Black Out Mascara is truly a beautiful thing. It’s one of the very few cosmetic products I won’t leave home without.

Secret #1 to DiorShow Black Out Mascara: The Brush

FutureDerm DiorShow Black Out Mascara Why The Wand Matters

Believe it or not, there is an actual science to mascara brushes. For the most “va-va-voom,” it’s best to choose a brush that is large, rubbery, and with long bristles. Larger brushes are simply able to cover more surface area with each stroke than smaller brushes.

Experts have already determined rubber cushioning makes brushing hair easier, as the cushion expands and retracts with the thickness of your hair and eyelashes (Milady Standard Cosmetology, 2012).

Finally, longer bristles means that the brush can “grip” each eyelash from root to tip, allowing for even, steady application of product.

Secret #2 to DiorShow Black Out Mascara: The Formulation

Christian Dior Diorshow Black Out Mascara is what is known as a water-soluble emulsion. Water-soluble mascaras typically have three major components: waxes for light, smooth, even application; pigments for color, definition, and depth; and resins to maintain texture, composition, and to keep the formulation in solution (Milady’s Encyclopedia of Hair).

Water-soluble mascaras are great because they are more easily removed than other types of formulations (namely those with petrolatum, which helps to make the formula waterproof). Unfortunately, you may need to watch that any mascara without petrolatum or petrolatum distillates does not run or smudge on the face. I’ve had solid success with Christian Dior DiorShow Black Out Mascara, but I do admittedly get the occasional smudge.

Best Use and Opinions

For best results, apply DiorShow Black Out Mascara in front of a mirror. Open your mouth slightly, which stabilizes jaw and eye muscles to prevent you from blinking. Apply with a steady, even stroke, beginning at the base of the eyelashes. As a water-soluble, wax-based product, you can layer DiorShow Black Out Mascara without issue, but make sure each coat dries before applying another.

Bottom Line

As longtime fans of the FutureDerm blog know, I look for a high concentration of ingredients, new technology, and value in my skin care. When it comes to mascara, I look for the right brush and the right formulation. DiorShow Black Out Mascara has both. I love this product, and I stand behind it 100%.

As far as mascaras go, finding your perfect fit can be quite the challenge. We all have something we're looking for, whether it's something to add a little va va voom or create lengths the distance of a football field (slight exaggeration). But when it comes to actually trying out and comparing some of the Sephora…

Believe it or not, there is a science to mascara. Sure, the differences between brushes may seem small, and the concentrations of ingredients between different formulas may in fact be the size of a dime or less, but your eyelashes are only 6.6 millimeters to begin with (Ophthalmology, 2010) -- and to them, a wider brush,…

I have never been able to wear non-waterproof varieties of mascara. I wish I could, because it seems like they work so much better, but my eyes water like crazy when I yawn so it’s not going to happen. I tried the waterproof version of DiorShow a few years ago and I was not impressed. I swear by Cover Girl’s Lash Blast. It does have a large rubbery brush and I’ve tried a bunch of different brands (at varying price points) and it’s still my favorite hands down. I’m okay with that, it’s usually less than $7!

Used Dior Show for years and love it but just discovered Benefit They’re Real after asking a friend with recently-amazing lashes what she had started to use. For me it’s actually better than Dior Show – would love to hear your thoughts.
