Reviewing Liv Tyler’s Skincare Routine

Share Article

Life can be stressful and we all need ways to unwind at the end of the day. Lately, mine has been Vogue’s “Beauty Secrets” series on Youtube. Basically, it’s a bunch of famous people doing their skincare and beauty routines step by step and it is both fascinating and relaxing.

Liv Tyler’s has been my favorite thus far. She talks about how her mother and her grandmother are her beauty inspirations, and she learned how to take proper care of her skin from her grandma who taught her the beauty of moisturizing and exfoliating as a young girl. She also bonds with her rockstar dad Steven Tyler over skincare products. She is definitely a skincare fanatic and it shows. Her skin looks incredible! There is a lot of helpful info in her routine so I thought I would break it down step by step.

Beauty Tips and Tricks

The key to beauty according to Liv? Sleep and lots of water! And she’s not wrong. Not getting enough sleep can cause wrinkles, skin discoloration and weight gain. And if you want to keep your skin firm and glowing, you have to stay hydrated.

She also recommends drinking “green juice” daily because “your body loves green things.” She uses celery, cucumber, apple, and spinach or kale in her drinks. I also get behind this as well. Green smoothies are excellent for your skin! Green smoothies are a way to access many nutrients your skin might not get otherwise, like enzymes, antioxidants, and minerals. While the skinless fruit used in juice can be high in sugar, this can be easily corrected by adding some fiber-rich leafy greens or seeds. Green smoothies may also be an aid but not a cure for inflammatory skin diseases like dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and adult acne. This is my favorite green juice recipe.

A couple of times throughout the video she says that “exfoliation is the key to beautiful skin.” The act of exfoliation is a means to remove all the built-up dead skin cells and plug-mucus (sure, it’s a scientific term) from the surface of your skin, making way for a fresh start for the healthy cells underneath. If left alone, that layer of clingy dead skin cells can leave your skin looking dull, dry, and flaky. When done properly, exfoliating leaves your skin looking younger and more vibrant. In addition, exfoliating regularly can help ensure that your topical skincare products like serums and acne treatments are able to penetrate the skin more effectively.

Liv also reminds everyone that whatever you put on your face, you should also be putting on your neck and hands as these are the places that start to show age the earliest.

Double Cleanse

Tyler says that her eyes are very sensitive and that she finds most eye makeup removers very irritating. That is why she loves the Sarah Chapman Skinesis Lash Boosting Eye Cleanse which she uses on her entire face. She follows it up with the Chidoriya Hydrating Facial Soap. “It’s made from pure silk and rice bran, and it’s just this really beautiful, this is the little bar of soap,” she says of the Japanese cleanser (which is currently sold out, no doubt because of this video!) By now, everyone should know the benefits of double cleansing. It’s very rare that you’ll find a normal cleanser that removes all makeup and impurities at once, so using two different types of cleansers is a really great way to ensure that you’re removing all your leftover makeup.

Double Mask

After Tyler double cleanses her skin, she goes in with a double mask. This step seems a bit unnecessary to me as I don’t believe that a wash-off face mask is more beneficial than a peptide toner or essence that is jam-packed with niacinamide or antioxidants like CoQ10. Either way, she likes to use two masks to get two different benefits. The first is a clay mask, the Astara Blue Flame Purification Mask. “It’s really good to sort of draw out any impurities in your skin, and it also gives it a good glow.” After removing it, she then uses a hydrating mask, the Dr. Barbara Sturm Face Mask. “It’s really good to also do a hydrating mask of any kind,” she says, explaining that she uses this one in particular because it “feels kind of cool and hydrating and moisturizing.”

Serum

After masking, she goes in with her serum. Her serum of choice is Dr. Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Serum. This serum is used by many celebrities in this beauty secrets series. This serum uses sodium hyaluronate which is an excellent ingredient for skincare products, as it effectively binds to water under both high and low humidity. This plumps the skin and temporarily gives the reduced appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and provides a barrier of protection for the skin.

After applying her serum, she uses a textured rolling tool from Sarah Chapman to help contour her face. “It feels really good if you’re stressed and you clench your jaw and stuff, but it’s supposed to kind of help contour this part of your neck,” she says. After that, she uses the Talika Eye Therapy Patches, which she stores in the fridge.

Double Moisturize

In addition to double cleansing, and double masking, Liv Tyler loves to double moisturize. Triple moisturize if you include the face mist. “I like to use oils on my face,” she says before first going in with the Rodin Olio Lusso face oil. She follows up with a French pharmacy favorite, Avène Extremely Rich Compensating Cream. She loves to use this on set and says it works great under makeup.

Tyler loves when her skin has a glow (celebs, they’re just like us, right?) So she finishes off her skincare routine with the Sisley Paris Floral Spray Mist, and the Glow Drops from Dr. Barbara Sturm.

Overall, I think she has a great routine with a strong emphasis on hydration which is the best for those with aging skin. If you have oily, acne-prone skin I would suggest you don’t follow this routine as it might be too rich and emollient for your skin. And If it were me, I would swap out the double mask step for a soothing toner and hydrating essence.
