Ah, just when I think I’ve heard it all, I run across MaMa Lotion ($44.50, Cosmeticville.com). A dermatological-grade potent combination of 20% unique alpha hydroxy acids (10% mandelic acid, 10% malic acid), MaMa Lotion has what it takes to become a new regular in my skin care line-up, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, freckles, acne blemishes, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, melasma, ingrown hairs, and rough skin.
One of the main ingredients in MaMa Lotion, mandelic acid, is an alpha hydroxy acid derived from almonds. According to research published in the journal Tetrahedron, mandelic acid is a potent antioxidant, preventing skin lipid peroxidation when applied topically. A review in Clinics in Dermatology further affirms that mandelic acid is an AHA tat is able to treat signs of photoaging (including skin roughness and fine lines). Interestingly enough, mandelic acid is also used at 0.5% in antimicrobial solutions as an activating solution for 0.1% sodium chlorite.
Malic acid (hydroxybutanedioic acid) is an alpha hydroxy acid that is found naturally in apples. In the Journal of Dermatology, a published study found that a combination of malic acid and glycolic acid increased cell proliferation and functional activation of fibroblasts, indicating that the ingredient is effective in stimulating collagen production. Although it has been reported in the International Journal of Skin Science that malic acid is somewhat less effective than the alpha hydroxy acids glycolic acid and lactic acid, in combination with other AHAs (like the mandelic acid in MaMa Lotion), malic acid has been reported to have great efficacy in treating skin roughness, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. Unlike the other AHAs, malic acid has also been demonstrated to have some level of anti-microbial activity, as reported in The American Journal of Enology and Viticulture.

Skin following 1 month treatment with MaMa Lotion.
MaMa Lotion is a very strong and effective product, with 20% AHAs and a pH of 2.5. For this reason, special instructions are necessary for those using MaMa Lotion; namely, MaMa Lotion should not be used more than twice a week for the first few weeks, and usage can then be increased to every other day or everyday, depending on the skin’s tolerance of the product. A gentle, broad-spectrum sunscreen, like LaRoche Posay, should be used everyday in conjunction with the product, and other products with AHAs, retinol, and the sun should be avoided. Those with darker skin should additionally consult this page for further instructions.
Although MaMa Lotion goes on very thick, it absorbs into the skin within 10-15 minutes, leaving the skin extremely smooth. The treatment can also be used on rough areas like the knees, elbows, and feet (with appropriate sun protection on these areas, of course!) With that said, I love MaMa Lotion. Although the very potent product does need to be used with caution, when used properly and in conjunction with proper sun protection, it really gives skin a fantastic glow! Product rating: 9.5/10. (High concentration of effective ingredients: 3+/3. New technology or unique formulation: 3/3. Value for the money: 3/3. Sunscreen: 0.5/1; there is no sunscreen in this product, but it should only be used at night anyway, so it is only a 0.5 deduction).
If you would like to try MaMa Lotion, Cosmeticville.com is currently giving away a free sample of MaMa lotion with any purchase! In the comments box at checkout, put - MaMa Lotion Sample. For more information, please visit Cosmeticville.com.
Water, Mandelic Acid, Malic Acid, Algae Extract, Polyacrylamide, Potassium Hydroxide, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Ubiquinone, Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, Fragrance, Squalane, Laureth-7, Tetrasodium EDTA, Isopropylparaben, Isobutylparaben and Butylparaben.

Curel’s New Life StagesTM line is fresh into drugstores this month, and designed to treat skin through various stages of aging. The first, Curél Life’s Stages First Signs of Aging Youth Defense Moisture Lotion ($7.79, Drugstore.com), “replenishes essential building blocks found in naturally young, healthy skin and increases skin’s moisture level via a blend of skin hydrators, Vitamins C & E and collagen,” according to OB/GYN and Curél Consultant, Dr. Miriam Greene. According to the company, you see and feel healthier skin in just 1 week of daily use.
Very hydrating
Curél Life’s Stages First Signs of Aging Youth Defense Moisture Lotion contains a lot of hydrating ingredients, including glycerin, cetyl alcohol, petrolatum, shea butter, collagen, elastin, dimethicone and paraffin. The formula itself has the consistency of a thick lotion, and it takes a few seconds to rub in. However, it leaves skin feeling powdery soft and hydrated, rather than oily or sticky. Click here for a free sample!
Vitamins C and E
Curél Life’s Stages First Signs of Aging Youth Defense Moisture Lotion contains the ultra-promising combination of vitamin (as ascorbyl palmitate) and vitamin E. Ascorbyl palmitate is actually a fat-soluble ester of L-ascorbic acid (L-ascorbic acid combined with palmitic acid, a fatty acid). According to a 1997 study, ascorbyl palmitate is more stable than L-ascorbic acid. A 2001 study in the International Journal of Pharmaceutics found that the stability of ascorbyl palmitate was increased further when ascorbyl palmitate was used in high concentrations (1-2%), or placed in water-in-oil emulsions like in Curél Life’s Stages First Signs of Aging Youth Defense Moisture Lotion rather than oil-in-water emulsions.
According to Dr. Leslie Baumann’s Cosmetic Dermatology textbook, vitamin C and vitamin E are network antioxidants that have been found to synergistically enhance the power of one another. (When one antioxidant is depleted, it can essentially “borrow” an electron from the other antioxidant to renew itself, and vice versa). Vitamins C and E as L-ascorbic acid and tocopheryl acetate have also been reported by Djerassi et. al. to prevent the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines. Vitamin C and vitamin E have also been shown to enhance the photoprotective effects of sunscreen, as vitamin C has been reported to enhance UVA protection, whereas vitamin E is more effective against UVB radiation. By using network antioxidants on your body, you can prevent future signs of aging induced from free-radical production.
Sage Leaf Extract
According to an article in BioFactors, sage is a natural compound that has antioxidant properties. According to OB/GYN and Curél Consultant, Dr. Miriam Greene, “Sage reduces redness and irritation.” Given that sage appears to be in fairly high concentration in the product (my best educated guess would be around 1% or higher), it should be effective in soothing reddened skin.
Against my favorite body lotion, Olay Quench Body Lotion for Normal to Dry Skin ($18.64 for two, Amazon.com), Curél Life’s Stages First Signs of Aging Youth Defense Moisture Lotion does pretty well. According to a study by Bissett et. al., niacinamide in Olay Quench treats hyperpigmented spots and skin sallowness and reduces redness, but so does the vitamin C and sage extract in the Curél Life’s Stages First Signs of Aging product. However, according to the study by Bissett et. al., niacinamide may reduce fine lines and wrinkles over time, while Curél Life’s Stages First Signs of Aging Youth Defense Moisture Lotion probably will not.
Against another new body lotion, Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizer SPF 15 ($10.99, Drugstore.com), Curél Life’s Stages First Signs of Aging Youth Defense Moisture Lotion does even better. Although both contain hydrating dimethicone, Curél Life’s Stages First Signs of Aging Youth Defense Moisture Lotion contains antioxidants vitamin C and E, which have been shown to enhance the power of sunscreen when used in conjunction with sunscreen. If you apply Curél Life’s Stages First Signs of Aging Youth Defense Moisture Lotion and a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen over it on exposed areas of the body, I definitely prefer the Curél Life’s Stages First Signs of Aging Youth Defense Moisture Lotion.
I’m still learning, but in my opinion…
Curél Life’s Stages First Signs of Aging Youth Defense Moisture Lotion is hydrating, fights redness, and prevents future free-radical induced damage. Used daily in conjunction with sunscreen, and it’s a winner!
One note: The product has a light scent, so you may not want to use it in conjunction with your favorite perfume. You be the judge: Click here for a free sample!

Theraplex ($16.50, Theraplex.com) consists of a “water-in-oil” emulsion that leaves the skin without greasiness or tackiness. It is recommended by Dr. Kenneth Beer, M.D., on the Theraplex website for helping to aid dry skin: “Theraplex can help to not only protect your skin from the elements but also to restore the moisture your skin craves. ”
What is special about Theraplex?
Developed in the early 1990’s by Swiss scientist Dr. H.R. Suess, Theraplex contains a special petrolatum fraction that is an “oil-in-water” emulsion. By using this formulation, over 82% of the oily residue left on the skin by mineral oil-based moisturizers is taken away, leaving the skin feeling smooth and hydrated, rather than oily or sticky.
Unfortunately, Theraplex does not contain antioxidants, retinoids, or sunscreen, and is therefore primarily a dry skin treatment. It is, however, hypoallergic, noncomedogenic, and fragrance-free.
There are four Theraplex moisturizers. Which is best?

According to the company brochure, Theraplex Emolient ($21.00, Theraplex.com) is designed for patients with severe dry skin including eczema, xerosis, and psoriasis. Theraplex Emolient is particularly effective on chapped lips, hands, elbows, and feet, as well as hardened cuticles. It contains a very high concentration of the oil-in-water petrolatum emulsion, so it goes on heavy, more like a balm than a lotion.

My personal favorite, Theraplex Hydrolotion ($16.50, Theraplex.com), is designed as a daily moisturizer for the face and body. Again, it does not contain anti-aging ingredients or sunscreen, so it is primarily to be used as a dry skin treatment. According to a company-reported study by the University Dermatology Clinic in Wein, Germany, 80% of dermatologists and physicians said that Theraplex Hydrolotion was good to very good at protecting and relieving dry skin, and an additional 14-15% were satisfied with the ability of Theraplex Hydrolotion to protect and relieve dry skin. Theraplex Hydrolotion has a lower concentration of the oil-in-water petrolatum emulsion than Theraplex Emolient, so it goes on like a lotion and dries quickly. It is non-scented, so it makes a good body lotion for dry skin under perfume.

A close second favorite, Theraplex Clearlotion ($18.50, Theraplex.com), is a liquid formula designed for use after the shower or bath. Unlike Theraplex Hydrolotion, it contains mineral oil and jojoba oil, which is included to lock in even more moisture right after the shower or bath. Its texture is that of an oil, but it dries quickly, leaving the skin hydrated and soft. It is also non-scented, and makes a good after-shower body lotion for dry skin under your favorite perfume.

The last lotion, Theraplex FT ($21.00, Theraplex.com) is designed for patients with very dry skin, and is recommended for scaly or callused feet. It contains a high concentration of the special petrolatum fraction, plus exfoliating salicyclic acid. It contains a very high concentration of the oil-in-water petrolatum emulsion, so it goes on more like a balm than a lotion.
Giveaway for Theraplex Samples!
Theraplex has offered to give samples of all four formulations to one lucky FutureDerm reader! To enter, leave your name and e-mail address in “Comments” below by Friday, March 7, 2008. On Friday, March 7, 2008 at 4:00 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, one lucky winner will be chosen at random to win! Good luck, and happy commenting!
Overall opinions…
Theraplex contains a unique form of petrolatum that is effective against most forms of dry skin. Dr. Kenneth Beer recommends that patients who use Theraplex daily for 1-2 weeks without dry skin improvement should see a dermatologist. After several weeks of use myself, I find the Theraplex Hydrolotion and Theraplex Clearlotion to be effective in treating dry skin without any oily residue or scent. I think the formulations designed for drier types of skin, Theraplex Emolient and Theraplex FT are very balm-like and somewhat sticky, but less so than pure petrolatum. At any rate, Theraplex is effective in treating dry skin, and I love Theraplex Hydrolotion and Theraplex Clearlotion! Good luck in the contest too!
