5 Easy Steps to Incorporating Braids from NYFW

Share Article

New York Fashion Week is over, and our heads are spinning from all of the great looks seen on the runway for spring; makeup ranged from bright, bold streaks of blush, as seen on models at Assembly, to subtle, clean skin over at Edun. Hair, on the other hand, tended to take a simpler approach: think natural textures and braids for spring. Looks like your morning routine just got a lot simpler.

I know what you’re thinking – braids are back? Did they ever go away? And to that, my dear reader, I answer no, or at least not really; braids are one hair trend that never seems to quite go away.

For those of you hoping to introduce some NYFW trends into your life, we’re putting together a series of hair tutorials so you can show off your fancy-fingered skills in real life. Today, we conquer braids.

The Upside Down Braided Top Knot

This simple updo is great when you want to throw your hair back into something simple, but want something a little more creative than your typical top knot. For this look, I used bobby pins, a fine-toothed comb, and a hair elastic. My hair was dry and styled with coconut oil prior to the top knot. Depending on your hair type, products aren’t necessary, but if you have particularly coarse or frizzy hair like me, I’d put in your daily products to tam5 Eae the fly-aways.

1. Begin with your head upside down. For this, it’s crucial that you know how to French braid because that’s pretty much all you’re doing. With your head upside down, comb your hair to get rid of any knots, creating a smooth, uniform texture.

2. Once your hair is detangled and brushed away from the nape of your neck, begin French braiding your hair, making sure to smooth out any bumps or knots as you go along. You’re going to want to French braid until you reach the crown of your head, at which point you should have about 75% of your hair braided and the rest untouched towards the top of your hairline. Gather all of your hair and secure into a hair elastic.

3. This next step is optional, but since I have shorter hair, I don’t have much to work with in terms of volume for a top knot. I teased the ponytail, and then sectioned it off to wrap around the elastic, which I then secured with bobby pins.

4. Finishing touches for the look include weaving bobby pins into whatever loose sections you have as well as spraying the top with hair spray if you’re prone to fly aways.

After you’ve tamed the stray hairs, you’re done! Don’t be surprised when friends (and strangers) ask you how you did it.
