5 Reasons You Need a Clarisonic Skin Care Brush — Starting Today!

Clarisonic Skin Care Brush

Let’s face it, there are relatively few truly scientific innovations in skin care devices. Lasers, peels, Botox — much of the rest is a lot of fuss and a ton of hype. But one device that has stood the test of time is the Clarisonic ARIA Skin Care Brush ($195.00, FutureDerm.com/Shop). I’ve been so in love with mine for the past few years, I decided to start selling it in FutureDerm Shop for use with our products — that’s how highly I recommend it!

Here are five reasons why I use my Clarisonic ARIA Skin Care Brush religiously every other night.

1.) The Clarisonic ARIA Skin Care Brush reduces breakouts.

According to a 2006 study in the journal Cosmetic Dermatology, the Clarisonic ARIA Skin Care Brush oscillates at 300 times each second. This is fast enough that pimple-forming debris becomes loosened and can be cleared from the skin. In the study, it was mentioned that the Clarisonic ARIA Skin Care Brush may reduce the appearance of breakouts.

2.) The Clarisonic ARIA Skin Care Brush is gently powered with sonic technology.

According to dermatologist Dr. Zoe Draelos, M.D., the brush was developed by the same team of engineers and researchers that developed the Phillips Sonicare Toothbrush. “Sonic” simply means waves of energy on the “sound” frequency.

All skin care brushes will mechanically clean the skin. By this I mean, the brush just scrapes the surface of the skin, resulting in debris becoming dislodged, and then swept away. Pretty simple!

Sonic skin care brushes add in a second form of cleansing known as fluid dynamics. Essentially, sonic skin care brushes rotate so quickly, they cause the mixture of water-and-cleanser molecules to move very quickly. It’s a very small motion to you and me, but if you are a pore, it’s like being swept with a tornado. This whirling fluid vibrates more than 500 times a second, effectively sweeping your pores of debris. Pretty awesome!

3.) You can use just about any non-soap cleanser with the Clarisonic ARIA Skin Care Brush.

Clarisonic Hydro Cleanser

According to the Clarisonic website, “any non-abrasive cleanser can be used.” As in, forget your cleanser with microdermabrasion crystals or exfoliating beads.

However, Clarisonic further recommends “optimized” use of the Clarisonic ARIA Skin Care Brush with one of their three cleansers. Of the three Clarisonic cleansers, my favorite is the Clarisonic Gentle Hydro Cleanser ($25.00, Clarisonic.com) for normal to sensitive skin. The cleanser contains a fairly high concentration of antioxidant vitamin E, and keeps drying low-molecular weight alcohols to a minimum.

If I may, I alternatively recommend using our FutureDerm Skin Reborn Cleanser ($39.00), which is pH balanced and contains a quaternium ion that helps to draw out charged debris. This is all on a very tiny scale, but I swear, you do see a difference in your pores over time!

No matter which cleanser you choose, I also recommend following up with our FutureDerm Seven Wonders Antioxidant Toner ($29.00), which contains seven different antioxidants, including grape seed extract, eucalyptus, and red, white, and green teas, the latter of which is shown to reduce inflammation and take down swelling following UV exposure (Carcinogenesis, 2001).  After using the Clarisonic ARIA Skin Care Brush with either recommended cleanser, FutureDerm Seven Wonders Antioxidant Toner is soothing and provides a healthy dose of antioxidants to replenish the vitamin E that is lost from cleansing off the natural oils of the skin (Skin Pharmacology and Physiology, 2001).

4.) It is suitable for use if your skin is scarred, blemished, or both.

One theoretical concern for those with marred skin is that the brush could mechanically scrape the surface or make it more uneven. However, this has been disproven, as Dr. Draelos states, “The sonic motion of the brush aids in dislodging facial debris, much like the sonic surgical-instrument cleansers that are used to clean liposuction cannulas and reusable injection needles…the face brush is designed to traverse facial dermatoglyphics, pores, and scars”.

In reality, the Clarisonic ARIA Skin Care Brush may be ideal for patients with acne, as unclogging the pores is a common goal of treatment. To unclog the pores, dermatologists typically use topicals like salicyclic acid (softens the keratin of the skin, making it easy to draw debris out) and retinol (increases cellular turnover rates, forcing dead skin cells and some debris out), as well as antibacterial agents like benzoyl peroxide.

Though Clarisonic also sells a Clarisonic MIA Acne Cleansing System, you can get the same results from the classic ARIA skin brush and 2% salicylic acid cleanser, 10% benzoyl peroxide, and up to 1% retinol.

5.) The Clarisonic ARIA Skin Care Brush is not harmful (and is actually beneficial) for your skin.

The 2006 study in the journal Cosmetic Dermatology states that the Clarisonic ARIA Skin Care Brush not only is a “gentle” means of cleansing, but it also prevents the skin from being compromised by acute or chronic infections resulting from inadequate cleansing of the skin.

Other Considerations

According to the user’s guide, the brush heads should be replaced every 90 days when being used at the recommended frequency of two times per day.

Bottom Line

I very highly recommend use of the Clarisonic ARIA Skin Care Brush with either Clarisonic Gentle Hydro Cleanser or FutureDerm Skin Reborn Cleanser for thorough cleansing every other day for those with normal to dry skin.

Alternatively, I recommend the Clarisonic ARIA Skin Care Brush with Clarisonic Gentle Hydro Cleanser or FutureDerm Skin Reborn Cleanser twice daily for those with oily and acne-prone skin.

I say every other day, rather than twice daily, for those with normal to dry skin because the skin contains natural oils (Skin Pharmacology and Physiology, 2001). While excessive amounts of these oils can promote the growth of acne-causing bacteria, removing these oils completely strips the skin of antioxidants and can impair skin’s barrier function, leaving it more susceptible to infection, inflammation, and irritation. That is why you should always follow up with an antioxidant- and hydrator-rich toner, serum, or both. I recommend our FutureDerm Seven Wonders Antioxidant Toner immediately after cleansing.
