So let me kick off this post by being honest about something: I don’t like most facial oils. In fact, I don’t like the vast majority of facial oils. They’re usually beneficial ingredients embedded in a harder-than-usual substance to traverse, so the beneficial ingredients usually don’t even reach your skin (!), and some can suffocate the skin.

But then I found the brand-new Amalie SHINE Facial Oil — and finally met a facial oil I can give a full glowing endorsement. With super antioxidant (and natural sunscreen) pomegranate, fatty acid-rich argan oil, and natural skin oil-mimicking jojoba oil rounding out the three most concentrated ingredients, this is a fantastic facial oil I give two thumbs up. For more details on the science behind the ingredients and my personal experience with the product, read on!

Pomegranate is Probably My Favorite Natural Ingredient

Sun damage has been reported to be the number one preventable cause of skin cancer and premature skin aging. However, it has been proposed that pomegranates can protect against UV-induced damage in human keratinocytes, both UVA and UVB in two separate studies in the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology. From the studies, it appears that pomegranates protect against UVA-induced damage by modulating phosphorylation in cellular pathways. When left uninhibited, UVA-induced damage includes the release of oxidative species, resulting in immunosuppression, photodermatoses, photoaging and photocarcinogenesis.

Pomegranates appear to protect against UVB-induced damage by inhibiting the UVB-mediated activation of certain inflammatory pathways in the skin, called the MAPK and NF-κB pathways. When left uninhibited, UVB-induced damage includes inflammation and the release of oxidative species, and ultimately result in erythema, hyperplasia, hyperpigmentation, immunosuppression, photoaging and skin cancer.

But what my readers are even more interested in than science is skin benefits — and pomegrate has those as well! Pomegranates were found in at least one study to thicken up the uppermost layer of the skin (like retinoids do over time). In a 2005 study from the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, it was found that pomegranate seed oil was shown to stimulate keratinocyte (skin cell) proliferation in monolayer culture, and a mild thickening of the epidermis (without the loss of ordered differentiation) was observed in skin organ culture.

Jojoba Oil is Fantastic

Because jojoba is so similar to our skin’s natural oil, it is thought that jojoba oil can “trick” the skin into thinking it’s producing enough oil, which helps balance oil production [Source: Acne.org]. “Jojoba oil is rich in natural fats that mimic those in the outer layer of the skin,” explains Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. “This means it can help the skin retain moisture and heal itself.” (source)

Scientific research confirms this. One study shows that use of jojoba oil shows modest swelling, indicative of moisture retention, in the stratum corneum (uppermost layer of skin) after use (Journal of Dermatological Science, 2008). Jojoba oil can also help to increase the penetration of other ingredients into the skin, something that may be useful for anti-acne treatments, such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or retinoids (Journal of the American Oil Chemists’ Society, 1984).

This means that jojoba oil is good for those with oily and acne-prone skin in small amounts. Just remember what I said above: Applying too much of any oil is not a good thing. Think a dime-size amount for the entire face.

Personal Use and Opinions

I like to use SHINE after I apply sunscreen, but before I apply my foundation — like a primer. It has a texture that enables the product to be like an antioxidant-rich primer, which I appreciate.
