BB and CC Creams War – Round 5

Cosmetics, Skin Care

Olay Fresh Effects BB Cream sent by Influenster. NARS & Sonia Kashuk purchased by me. All opinions are my own.

Happy Friday! It’s time for another round of BB & CC Creams War. This time I’ve got the Olay Fresh Effects BB Cream, NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30, and Sonia Kashuk Radiant Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15 for you to check out.

Just a reminder, BB creams should act as a moisturizer, have high SPF,  work as foundation, work as concealer, have anti-aging properties, brightening properties, nourishing properties, and some claim to also prime the skin. In other words, BB Creams are supposed to be full coverage products. CC Creams should have high SPF, better coverage, alleviate uneven skintones, and have a lighter and better texture so your real skin shines through. Tinted moisturizers usually have SPF, a tint to even out your skintone, moisturize the skin, and some have anti-aging benefits.

Sonia Kashuk® Radiant Tinted Moisturizer With SPF 15 – $13.69 for 1.75 fl. oz.

NARS vs. Sonia Kashuk vs. Olay
Here’s what all three look like swatched on my face and on half of my face.
Full Face Shots
This is me wearing the Sonia Kashuk, the Olay, and the NARS. I feel like the Olay looks like I’m wearing nothing at all, in a bad way!
The Sonia Kashuk® Radiant Tinted Moisturizer in Fair is a pretty good match for my skintone. It’s a tiny bit more peachy than my skin, but it covers up some the redness in my face. It doesn’t blur imperfections, nor does it claim to. It does do a nice job of leaving me glowing. It feels nice on the skin. It’s SPF 15 is too low for me to consider wearing it on its own, as I have rosacea and strive for SPF 30 or greater. So while this isn’t a winner for me, it may be for you.
The Olay Fresh Effects BB Cream! Skin Perfecting has to be the worst product that I’ve tried in this entire series. After I put it on, I could not tell that I had it on. My face stung slightly, as it didn’t seem to agree with the ingredients. I felt like it covered no flaws, did not minimize my redness and accentuated my pores. My skin looks horrible with it on! After wearing it for several hours, it looked like it sort of oxidized on the skin, because my face looked darker than my neck, but it still had no coverage! Dislike! It is also SPF 15, which is too low for me to wear. This product did not work for me at all and I have no idea who it would work for. I guess the only nice thing  I can say about it is that you’re getting 2.5 oz of product for the price.
The NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer is the clear winner in this round for me. It evens out my skintone. It doesn’t completely minimize my redness but it leaves me with a natural flush peeking through. It has an SPF of 30, which works for me. I can actually wear this on its own, or on top of my normal SPF 45 moisturizer. It’s perfect for the days when I’m in a hurry and need to bolt out the door and only have time to put on one product. It has a really nice shade range available. I actually own two shades – Finland and Terre-Neuve. While it is the most expensive of the three, you are getting 1.9 oz for the price. Additionally, this looks amazing if I just dust a bit of NARS Light Reflecting Loose Setting Powder on top.

Hi there! Loved reading your review and I now really want to purchase the Nars BB cream. Unfortunately there isn’t a Nars counter anywhere near me. So I’m going to have to buy it online, I’m a Mac shade NC20…Please can anyone help me choose a shade as the Nars site doesn’t offer make-up advice…Thanks so much X Nikki X

  • @Kimberly, Hi Kimberly, I don’t purchase non-cruelty-free products. I told Influenster NOT to send me the product, and the only reason it was included / reviewed was because I was asked to include it in the War of BB & CC Creams. It was a one time thing and will not happen again. I refuse all products that are not cruelty-free, which is one of the reasons I was really irritated when I was sent this product. Add in that it’s a crappy product, and I was really unhappy that they sent it. Hope that helps. I go into more detail on my blog on what I consider cruelty-free and what I buy. I don’t disparage or put down people who choose to purchase non-cruelty-free products. It’s my personal choice to buy cruelty-free beauty products, and I do so at every opportunity.

Hello Ive enjoyed your posts after recently discovering this blog. I noted you don’t purchase cruelty free so you say you won’t be reviewing them. However, the Olay sent by Influenster isn’t cruelty free but it was still reviewed. I too try to buy cruelty free nearly most of the time tho I haven’t found a couple of products to replace ones that work well for me which aren’t cruelty free. And I certainly admire your decision! Yet how do you resolve reviewing non cruelty free products when they are sent gratis or specifically for your review? Do you not feel it is acceptable to purchase in the name of more fairness such products in order to give a more broad review range? Many good people aren’t yet following cruelty free yet they still have an avid love and important need for cosmetics and anti-aging products that work well and suit their specific perhaps sensitive needs- even coloring needs, etc? My mother is a lovely good hearted person in her late 60’s who is oblivious to cruelty free concepts tho she is very aware of environmental concerns. I use her only as an example of a person who searches still for great beauty products yet isn’t concerned about them being cruelty free. I realize it is a very personal choice and by no means have I noted you ever disparage those who don’t follow cruelty free guidelines in the times I have read your excellent reviews I simply was curious about the subject and your thoughts. Again I appreciate your work and this sites’ great blog!

  • @Lizzy Since I only purchase cruelty-free products, I will not be purchasing the L’Oreal BB Cream.

  • Lizzy

I love these reviews and it helps that we have similar skin tones and coloring, although I have oily skin. Have you/will you be reviewing the L’Oreal BB cream as well? I use that one and am curious how it compares to others.

  • Meena

@linda I dont trust only a bb/cc cream as my sun protection so I wear a separate layer of sun block for that. I like to see reviews for creams with a lower spf, in my experience they are lighter and less irritating on my skin. So the reviews, even lower spf creams I find helpful.

  • @Leila

Hi Leila! Great to hear from you. I’ll check out Vichy Idealia. Laura Mercier and Estee Lauder are not cruelty-free, so I couldn’t purchase them.

I can only imagine how frustrating it is for you for your skin! Have you seen a dermatologist? Once I went to see my dermatologist and got my diagnosis of rosacea, I’ve been on medication that cleared up my constant break outs.

  • Leila

    Hi There!!!

First of all…i have become a huge fan! Always waiting for your next post 🙂

Since the 3rd month of pregnancy my perfect skin dissapeared! My son is now 2 years old and still have too deal with acne (never had that) and rosacea and now it is kind of a dry skin! What happened to my perfect kind of oily but glowing and no flaws skin?Only previous photos of mine can prove that now… 🙁 anyway, now i am always searching for good products in order to control “the beast”! LOL
I wanted to share with you that i have tried a lot of BB creams and Tinted Moisturizers (with a 2 year old son, it is dificult to get time to make a good makeup routine).Regarding my concerns, i loved Vichy Idealia BB cream SPF 25, Laura Mercier Iluminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 and Estee Lauder Bay Wear BB anti oxidant SPF 35. I like the kind of a natural beach look, not fake or like i am wearing a lot of makeup….and i have achieve that with this ones. Hope this post creats a new war!!! 😉
    Thank you!

  • Linda

Great, so just don’t include the spf 15 and under crowd.

  • Hi Holly, I haven’t tried Dr. Jart. When I tried the Miracle Skin I specifically purchased the Translucent because I thought the light would be too dark.

Hi AlaMakota, I’ll look into the Lorac. Glad you like the reviews!

  • Hi Linda,

If you’ll notice, I specifically state that BB Creams & CC Creams should have an SPF of 30 or greater and I ‘grade down’ when it’s only SPF 15 or 20. I reviewed the Missha Perfect Cover last week.

  • Linda

I really appreciate your reviews on the BB and CC creams…BUT I think there is a lot of wasted space and products. Most of the people who read FutureDerm are pretty sun savvy, and are Not going to leave the house with only an SPF of 15 or 20 on their face.
Why bother reviewing them. How about Starting with products of SPF 30 or higher?…things that will actually be used. ie. Dr. Jart, I am using Missa Perfect Cover SPF42+++, Excellent coverage. And you can get these products on Ebay or Amazon if not readily available.
Please review products for the serious-minded skin care folk.
    Thanks much

  • AlaMakota

Hi there, thank s for writing a cool blog! I have not tried any BB creams, however im currently using Lorac CC cream and i think it’s fantastic! It neutralizes all redness on my face and i just follow it with some setting powder. I haven had such a great foundation in a long time. Additionally, the Lorac brand is supposed to be pretty mild on the skin, and i often find that any itchiness that i have on my neck due to some harsh exfoliation, is handled really well with this product. Id love to hear your review about it. Thanks. Cheers!

  • Holly

Have you tried Dr. Jart? – either the Premium or Black Label. They are my favorite & I’m a BB/CC cream junkie! I have similar fair skin with a pink undertone. What’s so interesting is that when I tried the Miracle Skin Transformer, it gave me little to no coverage at all and returned it. I’ll definitely look into your other winners so far!
