.BioSilk Silk Therapy with Organic Coconut Oil hair serum is one of the latest additions to the BioSilk hair care line. I personally have been using BioSilk on my hair for about ten years, and I am a huge fan. As this is a “science of beauty” blog, I’ll mention that the product has three major ingredients that make it heat-protective and silkening for the hair: silicones, silk protein, and coconut oil.
I don’t know what we did before silicones. Oh, that’s right, I do remember: we walked around with cakey-looking foundation and big, straw-like hair. Silicones do everything in skin care, cosmetics, and hair products from promoting a feeling of silkiness to increasing applicability to cleverly disguising thin lines, wrinkles, and split ends. Specifically for the hair, silicones have been found to significantly reduce combing forces on the hair, resulting in less breakage over time. In fact, dimethicone has been found to be 20,000 times more effective than distearyldimonium chloride in reducing combing forces (Handbook of Cosmetic Science and Technology, 2009). Of all the thousands of products out there with silicones as a main ingredient, I like BioSilk the best; it made my fine, straight hair soft, manageable, and shinier.
Some do not like to use dimethicone or other silicones due to the fact that contact with the eyes may cause irritation. However, most scientists have concluded dimethicone and other silicones are safe for use in toiletries and cosmetics, as dimethicone has not been shown to be toxic when applied topically or inhaled in acute doses. In addition, the internet rumors that silicones cause tumors have been largely invalidated (International Journal of Toxicology, 2003). I understand some ultra-cautious may still want to avoid them and respect that decision, but I personally still use them.
Silk protein is able to deposit itself onto the skin or hair and make it, well, silky. The reason is that water-soluble silk protein deposits onto the skin or the natural hair keratin to provide a smooth and durable film to provide added strength for the skin or hair (US Patent). When combined with other water-sealing agents like silicones and coconut oil, it helps the hair shaft seem thicker, as well as smoother and silkier.
In general, coconut oil is considered to be a very heavy oil. It is frequently used in hair products that are designed for thick or curly hair, as it is heavy enough to weigh medium or fine hair types down. Coconut oil also contains triglycerides that are easily absorbed into the hair shaft, making the hair seem more smooth and thick.
In a product like BioSilk Silk Therapy with Organic Coconut OilBioSilk Silk Therapy with Organic Coconut Oil hair serum, the coconut oil is in low enough concentration where it should not weigh medium or fine hair types down like 100% coconut oil does.
.BioSilk Silk Therapy with Organic Coconut Oil is a solid addition to the BioSilk hair care line. It’s a solid product for heat-protecting, smoothing, and making the hair seem shinier and thicker. I do like it, and the ingredients here are solid.
