As much as we don’t want to admit it, the end of summer is quickly approaching and soon it will be cold and dry again. I hate even just typing that! But proper preparation prevents poor performance, so you’re going to want to start thinking about how to keep your lips from getting chapped this winter. Enter the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask.
“Bite Beauty’s intensive nightly recovery lip mask is handcrafted with agave nectar and jojoba oil. Rich and nourishing, it envelops lips in emollient ingredients to help hydrate and improve the texture of lips so they’re healthier-looking, soothed, and softer.”
Does it work? Let’s take a look:
Resveratrol is an antioxidant that’s found in red grapes, red wine, nuts, blueberries, and cranberries. It also just happens to be a superstar ingredient in skincare products with research to back it up! In a 2008 study published in Photochemistry and Photobiology, human skin cells treated with resveratrol prevented UVB-induced damage. The mechanism? Resveratrol inhibited the inflammatory NFkB pathway and decreased the skin cells’ production of hydrogen peroxide. With reduced levels of inflammation, less damage accrued in the cells. For you cell biologists out there, resveratrol has been found to specifically affect the NFkB pathway by inhibition of the MAPK pathway and targets in the regulatory protein cki-cyclin-cdk network (Cell and Molecular Biology review, 2008).
That all sounds great, but you’re probably wondering why you should be worried about resveratrol in a lip mask. Well, because resveratrol is a potent antioxidant that minimizes free radical damage! This allows the collagen in your lips to stay healthy, which results in a more firm, plump appearance. No filler required.
Lanolin is a wax secreted by sheep glands, which protects the sheep’s wool from the weather and harsh environment. It’s harvested from shorn wool. Because it helps to retain moisture in the skin, it has been used for thousands of years in a variety of cultures as an ointment.
The Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask uses a medical-grade form of lanolin known as Medilan. It has been ultra-purified and is hypoallergenic, which results in very little irritation to the skin. As mentioned earlier, because lanolin helps to retain moisture in the skin, this hypoallergenic and soothing form of it makes it a great option for those with eczema and other dry skin conditions.
That also makes it a great ingredient in a lip mask! In a study of 57 chemotherapy patients, researchers found that “patients who used… lanolin had lower dehydration and experienced improvement of lip dryness. The main symptoms were dehydration, discomfort, limitation of mouth opening, and pain. The main clinical signs were dry lips, mucositis, cheilitis, hematoma, swelling, and cracking. We suggest that… lanolin is effective in reducing the symptoms of dehydration and the signs of lip dryness resulting from toxicity of chemotherapy, proving to be an interesting alternative supportive therapy for cancer patients.”
However because lanolin is an animal-derived ingredient, that means this product is not vegan which may be an issue for some so I wanted to mention it!
Because jojoba oil is rich in fatty acids, it provides plenty of hydration for your lips without clogging the pores around your mouth. Jojoba is so similar to our skin’s natural oil, it is thought that jojoba oil can “trick” the skin into thinking it’s producing enough oil, which helps balance oil production. “Jojoba oil is rich in natural fats that mimic those in the outer layer of the skin,” explains Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. “This means it can help the skin retain moisture and heal itself.”
Scientific research confirms this. One study shows that the use of jojoba oil shows modest swelling, indicative of moisture retention, in the stratum corneum (uppermost layer of skin) after use (Journal of Dermatological Science, 2008). Jojoba oil can also help to increase the penetration of other ingredients into the skin!
Jojoba oil also acts as a barrier to protect your lips from extreme temperatures! Whether you’re outside in the cold, or your dry, indoor heat circulating through your house. Even air conditioning can make lips rough and uncomfortable. Jojoba oil helps to soften them and keep them protected and hydrated.
Bottom Line on The Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask
I’m a huge fan of this product! The Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask really does help to keep my lips feeling comfortable and hydrated after sitting in an air-conditioned office all day. It is not as thick as the Lip Sleeping Mask from Laneige so it’s better for everyday use. It also comes in a few different subtle tints which add a nice bit of color. Overall I definitely recommend it!
