As I mentioned in a previous review, I am a bit of a sunscreen fanatic. So when the opportunity came along to review another sunscreen, especially one that is “as good for skin as it is for the planet,” I couldn’t pass it up.
The CoTZ brand, which stands for “Contains Only Titanium dioxide and Zinc oxide,” was founded by a plastic surgeon whose goal was to create healthier sunscreens. The result was a mineral sunscreen with these two ingredients that are clean and safe for the environment. CoTZ sunscreens are free of all chemical sunscreens, including oxybenzone and octinoxate, which encourage coral bleaching. This formulation is highly relevant now, as Key West recently moved to ban these damaging sunscreens, following in the footsteps of Hawaii, which has already banned them.
Here’s why this matters: In 2015, an estimated 14,000 tons of sunscreen ended up in the world’s coral reefs causing major damage. And you don’t need to be spending a day at the beach in order to be conscious of your SPF ingredients. Environmentally-friendly formulations are important for everyone, as sunscreens enter the water whether or not someone is actually near a reef.
Environmental consciousness aside, zinc oxide and titanium oxide sunscreen formulations, also known as physical sunscreens, are actually preferred by skincare experts. Physical sunscreens work by blocking or deflecting UV light. Chemical sunscreens (i.e. oxybenzone and octinoxate) absorb UV light, and then transform that light energy (photons) into some other form of energy such as heat (more on this topic here). So, with physical sunscreens, UV light never actually reaches the skin.
Personal Use and Opinions
CoTZ Face Moisture Lightly Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 35 contains 16% zinc oxide as its active ingredient and is said to “hydrate skin while protecting from damaging UVA-UVB rays with a flattering light tint that blends with all skin tones.” It is water resistant for up to 80 minutes and includes ceramides to help protect the skin’s moisture barrier.
I really like the texture and consistency of this formulation. It’s smooth and creamy (almost velvety), and doesn’t leave my skin feeling slick and oily like other sunscreens do. It provides sheer coverage, so I still need to apply some foundation over top to even out my skin tone to my liking. Even though the tint doesn’t provide much coverage, I love the fact that it does not leave behind a chalky white residue like most zinc oxide sunscreens do. I’m impressed!
CoTZ has a solid product in their Face Moisture Lightly Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 35. I also want to say how refreshing it is to have found a skincare product that is environmentally-friendly AND contains proven ingredients that actually work. CoTZ Face Moisture Lightly Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 35 is sustainable, effective, and pleasant to use. What’s not to love?
