Amongst skincare cult favorites, Epionce Lytic Gel Cleanser is right up there with Skinceuticals CE Ferulic and LaMer. This ultra-popular cleanser has made a name for itself because it is simultaneously deep-cleansing and soothing, especially for those with oily and acne-prone skin, or who suffer from inflammation-based conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
I was honestly surprised to find this product doesn’t have any AHAs. I thought that the “lytic”, meaning “lysis,” or “the rupture of the cell wall or membrane,” implied a function I associated predominantly with AHAs in skincare, particularly glycolic acid. But nope — no glycolic acid isolates to be found. Instead, the “lytic” function here is accomplished with mild concentrations of citrus fruit extracts, which are a natural source of AHAs, but not concentrated.
The key to the deep cleansing is a blend of coconut-derived ingredients like sodium cocoamphoacetate and sodium cocoyl glutamate. These cleansers are simultaneously cleansing and gentle, without stripping the skin of delicate oils or upsetting its pH.
White willow bark, although in low concentration here, is quite potent, and should help to quell inflammation. White willow bark (Salix alba) is often touted by natural health enthusiasts because it is the plant from which aspirin is derived. White willow bark contains a number of potentially beneficial compounds, including aspirin (acetylsalicyclic acid), salicylic acid, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, glycosides, tannins, and flavonoids (Longwood Herbal, 2011). Clinically, white willow bark has been shown to have anti-pyretic and pain-relieving properties due to its inclusion of salicin (Skin Therapy Letters, 2000).
.Epionce Lytic Gel Cleanser does give you some degree of tingling after using it, stemming from the product’s menthol content. It should also be noted that a little goes a long way — just a dime-sized amount works for the face and neck. It does leave the skin feeling as though you’ve just had a facial from a pro — very clean and fresh, but not at all irritated or inflamed. I highly recommend it!
