When it comes to culty luxury skincare products, the Eve Lom Cleanser is at the top of most people’s list. It is what put Eve Lom on the map! According to their website, “with over 25 years of expertise, we utilize the highest quality ingredients in the most active formulations. Combining the best botanicals that nature has to offer with sophisticated science.”
Recently, they tried to bottle up the magic of their original cleanser (literally) into a cleansing capsule. The formula is tweaked slightly but is the magic of the original still there? Let’s see.
One of the featured ingredients in the Eve Lom Cleansing Oil Capsules is Camelina oil which they claim, “provides skin with a rich, gentle, hydrating cleanse, while simultaneously melting dirt and debris.” Camelina oil comes from a flowering plant that’s native from Finland to Romania and east to the Ural Mountains. It is used in food, medicine, and even lamp oil. Unfortunately, studies on its use in skincare are pretty lacking, but some of the compounds in this oil have positive benefits. Its seeds are harvested for the high-quality edible oil that contains skin and diet favorite, omega-3 fatty acid, and it has a low saturated fat content and contains vitamin E.
A lot of research on omega-3 fatty acids has to do with eating it, which has been shown to have all kinds of benefits, including reducing the skin of non-melanoma cancer from the inside out. Oral consumption of omega-3 fatty acids has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects and to stimulate collagen fibroblast production. But the research is pretty slim for topical application — mostly likely because eating a beneficial ingredient will have a bigger impact than applying it topically.
Vitamin E has more research for inclusion in cosmetics. It acts as antioxidant and increases the stability of the shelf life of this oil compared to others that are rich in omega-3s. And studies show that vitamin E protects against matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) mRNA that is responsible for degrading collagen.
So while there are no studies that specifically show that Camelina oil will hydrate the skin, it is primarily used here to “melt” your makeup in order to make it easier for removal.
Magnolia Bark Extract
The Eve Lom Cleansing Oil Capsules also contain Magnolia Bark Extract which they claim will “reduce the appearance of facial skin redness and help to soothe the skin.” Like many plant extracts used in skincare, magnolia has significant antioxidant activity. But it is not much to write home about and I am not sold on magnolia bark extract as anything more than another antioxidant.
Don’t depend on this for your antioxidants or for any real reduction in redness or irritation. On the bright side, though, it won’t add any further irritation.
Personal Use and Opinion
These cleansing oil capsules were made with people like me in mind. Women who are constantly “on the go” and traveling from place to place. Because what’s worse than opening up your suitcase and seeing cleansing oil spilled all over your clothes and other products? Not to mention bulky packaging taking up the much-needed space and in your suitcase or carry on. The capsules come with a travel set that allows you to take 7 capsules along, each with their own individual slot. It’s small and compact and fits easily into your carry on which I appreciate!
As for the product itself, I was pleasantly surprised! There is a lot more oil in each capsule than I originally thought, and I was able to take off all my makeup. It didn’t irritate my skin or my eyes or leave a film behind the way some cleansing balms and oils do. It didn’t take EVERYTHING off, but what it left behind I was able to get off easily by following up with a gel cleanser. If you’re someone who travels a lot, this is a cleanser I would definitely look into.
While the ingredients aren’t going to do anything life-changing for your skin, I don’t think they are bad or ineffective in the slightest. The Camelina oil is rich in vitamin E so it is able to break down your makeup without stripping the skin of its natural oils and making it feel tight and uncomfortable. There are smaller concentrations of four essential oils (chamomile, clove, eucalyptus, and hops) that also claim to soften and soothe the skin, though the published scientific research on essential oils is more limited at this time. If you are sensitive to essential oils, I would look out for that.
This product is made for women who travel! With its convenient traveling set, these capsules will save you room in your luggage and from the potential disaster of your product exploding all over your clothes! Overall, I recommend this one to all the jet setters out there.
