Follow Friday + Nicki’s Personal Updates: Why I Love Being Married

Share Article

As a Millennial, I was raised during a generation in which women weren’t supposed to “need” men. We were encouraged to get educated, build our own careers, and independently be able to fully support ourselves.

Maybe I’m not supposed to say it, and maybe I’ll take flack from some readers for saying so, but there is something to be said for sacrificing some independence and being married. Even in today’s society, where a woman is perfectly capable of living a perfectly wonderful life on her own (and I did, before I got married), there’s still something special about Life After You Find the One. So here are a list of some of my favorite things about it:

  1. Knowing someone has your back. And you have his.
  2. Knowing someone will be home when you get there. Or vice versa.
  3. That whole “not growing old alone” thing.
  4. Freedom to be domestic. For the first time in years, I’m cooking often, baking, and looking at home furniture with a newfound zeal. I know I could have done those things when I was single, but I think my spare time was spent out on the town with a friend or two, not with Betty Crocker.
  5. A level of comfort I’ve never had before. I’m not afraid to wear sweatpants, read my super-emotional books, or talk about what’s really bothering me.
  6. Monogrammed towels. ‘Nough said.
  7. Someone to share household chores with. My husband is super active in this area, so it’s awesome.
  8. Being a part of something greater than myself. Making memories that we’ll share with future generations. It’s super meaningful for me because I’m a bit isolationist, have a handful of close friends, and was never really a “team” person. I love it that we’re building something greater than ourselves.
