The Foreo Luna Cleansing Brush promises to deliver more radiant skin within just 3 days. With T-sonic technology delivering up to 8,000 pulsations per minute, and being clinically-proven to remove 99.5 percent of dirt and oil and 98.5 percent of makeup residue, the Foreo Luna Cleansing Brush both cleanses the face and combats signs of aging. The brush also has an “anti-aging mode,” which delivers lower-frequency pulsations through concentric silicone waves onto wrinkle-prone areas in order to smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Unlike other cleansing brushes, the Foreo Luna Cleansing Brush has two settings: high-frequency (for deep cleansing) and low-frequency (for anti-aging). The cleansing stage is designed to be experienced first; users apply the cleanser of their choice to wash away makeup, sweat, and oil, rinsing their face once the Luna has indicated the first minute is up by emitting three short pulses. The user then switches from the stand-by mode to the anti-aging mode, applying the opposite side of the Luna to wrinkle-prone areas for another minute. Again, the Luna will emit three short pulses, prompting the user to shut off the device.
But does it work? Here’s my analysis:
The High T-Sonic™ Setting Deeply Cleanses the Skin
To understand how the Luna works, we have to look into T-Sonic™ Technology, which is the same technology used by the Clarisonic cleansing brush to clear your pores of impurities, reduce the causes of blemishes, and refine the texture of your skin.
According to the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, most people do not manually clean the skin in a consistent fashion everyday. Inspired by sonic toothbrushes, researchers (and the lead developers of the Clarisonic system) applied the sonic technology to skincare, which guarantees a more consistent clean. The Clarisonic brush uses sonic speed oscillation to loosen inelastic comedones from your skin, leaving you with a clear, clean visage. Think of it as a standardized, mechanical way of exfoliation (Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology).
What makes the Foreo Luna different is its use of 13,000 non-abrasive “touch-points” coated with silicone. Silicone has the advantage of binding to debris and impurities on the surface of the skin without absorbing as much of your natural skin oils. Of course, this can be affected greatly by the cleanser you use, but it’s still an important quality nonetheless. Also notable: the Foreo Luna is advertised as more hygienic than the Clarisonic brush heads, which need to be replaced once they start showing wear and tear (Foreo).
The Low T-Sonic™ Setting May Help with Dry Skin and Signs of Aging
One of the differences between the Foreo Luna and the Clarisonic is that the Clarisonic only works on high, deep cleaning frequencies. On the other hand, the Foreo Luna also works on low frequencies. The lower frequencies may be useful for stimulating dry skin, as they have been shown to aid in the treatment of psoriasis (Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venearology).
Early studies support this. In a pilot study involving 21 women aged 30-50 years old, a facial massage for 20 minutes showed an increase in facial blood flow, temperature, and elasticity (Journal of Medical Technology and Physical Therapy).
Another study involving a robot programmed to mimic movements of a facial massage measured the dynamic properties of 86 people aged 20-75, with the results suggesting that facial treatments and skin care products could help skin recovery some of its lost elasticity (Ergonomics).
Silicone Brushes Last Longer than Cotton-Based Brushes
The Foreo Luna has silicone stiff bristles rather than the cottony tufted bristles of the Clarisonic, which in turn may make for a deeper, more effective cleansing. It also results in having more durability, as Foreo claims their silicone-based device is 35-times more hygienic than standard cleansing brushes.
I’m personally not someone who believes in a deep clean or exfoliation treatment more than once or twice per week. I use the Foreo Luna Cleansing Brush just twice per week, and I’ve found that it provides a high degree of cleansing. My face feels clean after each use, and the tiny blackheads on my nose appear to be more faint after each use. So I’m a fan of the Foreo Luna Cleansing Brush, and the science, though limited thus far, does back up regular use of the sonic technology for cleansing.
