The Company’s Summary
A vital link to keep us in touch with nature. FLOWER BY KENZO, the power of a singular, strong, pure and sensual flower. A nomadic flower, taking root in the asphalt. A flower in the city. The red poppy has no scent. Kenzo created its fragrance.
Originally launched in 2000, this scent marked Kenzo’s invention of the poppy fragrance. At once soft and floral, notes of violet, vanilla, and rose flourish with sly giddiness. It’s a contemporary perfume for urban women who look to nature for inspiration and renewal.
Uniquely packaged in a bottle embossed with a poppy, both the scent and the flacon have become contemporary classics. As Kenzo’s commitment to nature continues to evolve, so has this iconic bottle: Flower by Kenzo is now refillable. An easy-to-use refill pouch ensures that each bottle can last forever. (Or as long as you have it without losing it!)
Notes and Analysis
Wild Hawthorne, Bulgarian Rose, Parma Violet, Cassia, Hedione, Cyclosal, Opoponax, White Musk, Vanilla.
Powdery. Floral. Contemporary.
Known as the finest rose oil in the world, Bulgarian rose is derived from the Damask rose. Roses are a symbol of love and have been used since ancient times in perfumes.
First imported into Italy in the 19th century, its origins are somewhat mysterious. It is widely believed that there are two varieties of Parma Violet, but the second is regarded to be forgotten and waiting to be rediscovered. Violets are a symbol of modesty and faithfulness.
Musk has been an essential ingredient in perfumery since ancient times. Its capability to enhance a fragrance comes from its ability to adopt the fixative qualities of a natural scent. Musk is a linear tone, not a powdery one.
Hedione is derived from the Greek word “hedone,” which means pleasure. As it evaporates, hedione seems to remain in the air, which is an important quality, making it one of the most popular perfume materials. It’s signature is one of both a fruity floral quality.
Cassia is the aromatic bark of an eastern Asian tree (Cinnamomum aromaticum) of the laurel family, yielding an inferior kind of cinnamon.
Opoponax, also known as myrrh, is an herb used a lot in churches as incense. Opoponax has a scent that is warm and leathery, and quite complex, simultaneously nutty and and woody. It is like vanilla without the sweetness. In perfumery opoponax will often be used with vanilla to give the vanilla a broader base or heavier with some woodiness to the note.
Personal Use and Experience
I chose to sample this perfume on a recent trip to Sephora; it was one I had some trepidation over because I am not a fan of overly flowery scents and with the name of this one being Flower I thought for sure that is what I would be in for-especially when after research I found rose and parma violets in the top notes of this scent- two very powerful floral oils. It’s been my opinion that a lot of floral fragrances can be overwhelming or can come off as old fashioned but this fab scent is neither and has a wonderful likeable quality.
If you sniff the bottle you get duality- there is the floral aspect and a powerful powder scent. Once on; the floral aspect dries down quickly and takes a backseat to the vanilla, muskiness and powdery notes.
It doesn’t sound like that would smell particularly pleasant when I read it, but it does. It’s not too sweet in the vanilla that it would induce a headache and it’s my opinion that it is due to the woody bottom of the opoponax rounding out the vanilla. The finish has a slight spice to it thanks to the addition of the cassia. What stayed on my pulse points was a powdery, fresh scent. For all the complexity in the multitude of notes in this scent- it doesn’t wear as a complex scent. There is plenty of staying power to this perfume- a shower was required to clear my skin of its scent which is nice if you choose to wear this to work- you will not have to reapply during the day. It is definitely feminine and wearable; appropriate for day wear and casual events.
Did You Know?
Scent travels up as it evaporates, so it’s recommended that day time fragrances be sprayed lower on the body, while evening wear should be sprayed a bit higher on the body.
