Look good. Feel good. Do good. This pure scent adds a fresh drop of verbena to a world that needs a moment of calm. More than a fragrance, it embraces a way of being that takes time out for the simple things, the things closest to the heart: love, joy, comfort, relationships, and community.
This fragrance’s verbena calls to mind sparkling citrus and crisp green basil— a naturally derived ingredient sourced from Africa. The scent’s overall character is fresh and bright. A light mix of floral notes, including honeysuckle, peony, jasmine petals, is balanced with a finish of white amber, sea moss, and vetiver.
The bottle, organic in shape and inspired by a drop of water, appears to be formed by nature. The materials include 100% recyclable glass and a cap of high-purity aluminum. Its compostable box is made of sustainably harvested paper manufactured in a mill that uses 100% renewable energy.
How I Discovered PureDKNY Verbena
(You can’t see it but I’m doing a happy dance!)
For those of you who read my bio- you will note I grew up in a very cosmopolitan area, a small suburb right outside of Washington, DC but have chosen to raise my children in a more rural type setting- and we now live in an area that is much, much less suburban than the one I grew up in. I love where we live now- so many wonderful things about living and raising my boys in a small town but… I do miss some of the amenities that cosmopolitan living afforded me growing up- namely access to the latest and greatest stores carrying the newest trends. I was feeling really out of touch and missing that aspect so much; I am so pleased that Sephora is now open! I went for the first time only a few days after the opening of the store, and as I entered I knew this was my Graceland!
So much to look at, color palettes to explore- scents to try- this was awesome!
It can however be sensory overload there though, many, many scents all floating in the air. I was working with a wonderful sales clerk- I asked her what was brand new in the fragrance world, wanting to review a brand new product for FutureDerm readers, and she pointed to a few but nothing was striking me- then she said that DKNY had a scent she liked and it wasn’t brand new but was received by the public very well. I am so glad she recommended I try Pure DKNY Verbena.
I almost always know when I like a fragrance right away, however, I feel strongly that scent must work with your body chemistry, something that you can only determine after wearing it for a period of time and you must allow that when trying a new scent- having said that I still know right away whether I like the way a fragrance is composed and this scent was just that that way for me. It is not complex, but not so singularly strong to one note to come across as too simple either. It is pure as its namesake implies, pure, light, fresh and clean. Freshly showered, fresh rain, fresh cut grass. FRESH, FRESH, FRESH!

Fresh. Bright. Sophisticated.
What is Verbena?
Verbena is a genus in the family Verbenaceae. The majority of the species are native to the American continent and Europe. For fragrances, the oil or essence of lemon verbena is what is commonly used. Lemon verbena leaves are used to add a lemony flavor to fish and poultry dishes, vegetable marinades, salad dressings, jams, puddings, Greek yogurt and beverages. It also is used to make herbal teas, or added to standard tea in place of actual lemon. Moderate antioxidant supplementation with lemon verbena extract protects neutrophils against oxidative damage, decreases the signs of muscular damage in chronic running exercise without blocking the cellular adaptation to exercise (European Journal of Applied Physiology, 2011).
First to my nose and throughout the wear of this wonderful light scent is the lemony essence of the verbena, mixed in the middle wear of the fragrance is the warm, sweetness of the honeysuckle, the water element of the sea moss coupled with more warmth from vetiver in the finish round out the bottom of this scent with an ever so slight muskiness; in my opinion just enough to make this scent smell sophisticated. Vetiver is a perennial grass and adds a great earthy note to the finish.
Personal Use and Opinions
This scent has captured a place as one of my new favorites; the only negative is its lack of staying power. It is only available as a scent spray not as a perfume and given its lighter more subtle fragrant notes and the very light scent spray formulary it was destined to be a scent you would need to reapply for more than about two hours of wear time. It is available in a body butter and body wash, which is great news since as I have said before layering your scent in its different formulas can enhance its staying power.
This light, fresh scent is perfect for day or night and is sophisticated enough to cross over into more dressy events as well.
Did you know?
What does it mean that a scent does or does not work with your “body chemistry” and how does that work?
As your body heat rises, the perfume starts its magic. Perfumes smell differently because of a difference in body chemistry. Several factors can play a role in this including diet, acid balance, medication, skin oil, pigmentation, mood, and environmental factor. For example, if you were on a higher fat intake diet, the scents placed on your skin would be far more powerful than they might be on a person’s skin who were on a lower fat intake diet. Dramatic diet changes within your life can change the way your standard fragrances smell on you. Another good example is skin type. Folks with oily skin have perfumes that offer a more intense scent. People with dry skin have to reapply their fragrance often to get the same kinds of scent results. These factors not only change the actual scent on your skin, they can also have an influence over how long the perfume will last on your skin. If you notice that your favorite scent has undergone a change, you should think about what has changed in your life. Maybe you’ve just become so accustomed to your regular scent that you simply cannot smell it anymore. Whatever it is, it might be time for you to consider a new scent. (Kissmegoodnight.com)
