I started FutureDerm.com to speak honestly about beauty, skincare, and skin health. As most of our readers will already know, I am extremely conscious of safety when it comes to beauty products and ingredients. While some health scares are blown out of proportion, other concerns are absolutely warranted. FutureDerm.com has garnered over 10 million views by offering an impartial look at the safety of beauty products and ingredients.
While I have focused primarily on skincare and beauty products in the past, the safety of our drinking water is something I believe we all need to take seriously.
Contaminants in Tap and Bottled Water
When it comes to water, safety is a legitimate concern. Natural and man-made contaminants can permeate the water we use to drink, cook with, bathe in, and more. There are over 2100 known organic and synthetic contaminants found in water including heavy metals, chemicals such as chlorine, pesticides, and bacteria. Even bottled water may be unsafe. Approximately 45 percent of bottled water is unpurified, municipal-treated water straight from the tap.
So how can we know our water is safe without losing any of the beneficial minerals which naturally occur in water? Carbon water filters like Aquasana selectively reduce dangerous contaminants from drinking water while retaining healthy mineral deposits that balance the pH of drinking water. My family uses Aquasana to make sure our water is safe, tastes great, and has the essential minerals we need to stay healthy.
Dangers of Lead in Drinking Water
Amongst the most well-known water contaminants is lead. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least four million households have children that are being exposed to high levels of lead. Half a million children, ages one (1) to five (5), suffer from lead poisoning in the United States. More concerning, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), children drink 2.5 times more water than adults in proportion to their body weight, making them more susceptible to lead poisoning than adults.
As a new mom, I’m very conscious of lead consumption for my son and my family. I am a strong believer in point-of-use water filters to remove lead from drinking water immediately prior to consumption, thus preventing it from entering the body.
Water Contains Chemical Contaminants
Lead might be the headliner, but there are so many other chemicals which can contaminate our drinking water. Even some “heavy metals” such as iron can be found in water. These are often safe for consumption, but they give water a metallic, bitter taste. Aquasana filtration systems are capable of reducing toxic and non-toxic materials which contaminate our water. This leaves pure, undiminished water that I can serve to my family with confidence.
Some of the additional unwanted chemicals which are effectively filtered by Aquasana drinking water filters include:
PFOs/PFAs: Poly/Perfluoroalkyl Substances
These chemicals are commonly found in non-stick cookware. Beginning in the early 2000’s PFO/PFAs were no longer commercially available due to health concerns. Yet these man-made chemicals continue to pollute our water supplies in massive numbers. A Harvard study found that at least 6.5 million Americans were receiving water that exceeded federally recommended levels of PFOs. Heavily affected areas include Florida, California, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Alabama.
Chromium 6 in Water
Erin Brockovich is a well-known 2000 film based on a true story. The real Erin Brockovich successfully sued Pacific Gas & Electric in a 1996 case over high levels of hexavalent chromium (chromium 6) in the local town’s water supply. Unfortunately, chromium 6 in our water is not a thing of the past. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have highlighted health risks of exposure to chromium 6 in water, as an airborne pollutant, and as a skin irritation.
PFAs, chromium 6, iron, manganese, calcium, and a litany of other contaminants exist in our water supplies to this very day. These chemicals have the potential to cause long term damage to myself, and even more concerning, to my family. This is just one reason why water purification is a top priority in my household.
Unwanted Bacteria in Drinking Water
E coli, giardia, and cryptosporidium are natural bacteria which can be found in drinking water. Bacterial contamination of water can be caused by a number of reasons including animal feces, pastures, flood run off, and human waste. Water with these types of hazardous bacteria is not ideal for drinking, bathing, or anything in between.
Aquasana drinking water filters are effective at reducing over 99 percent of potentially harmful Giardia and Cyst Live Cryptosporidium. This not only keeps my family safe, but it makes our tap water taste fantastic! All of this is accomplished without losing the essential minerals which are found naturally in water.
Aquasana Installation and Use
The Aquasana water filtration system is relatively easy to use and install. I personally like it because I can trust that the water coming from any source in my house is safe without a second thought. This allows my family to drink clean water, cook with clean water, and serve clean drinking water without filling up a water pitcher and waiting for the water to filter. The water I use to bathe my son is as clean as the water we drink – as it should be!
Another huge advantage of the Aquasana 3 stage max flow undercounter system is the accompanying app. One issue I had with a lot of filters is that I would never keep track of when it was time to change the filter. By the time I could taste the chemicals in the water, who knows how long the filter had been overdue for a change. With the Aquasana app, I can rest assured that I will know when it’s time to order and install another filter.
