GLAMGLOW is a brand that has been a little hit or miss for me. There are a couple of masks in their line that I think are incredible (SUPERMUD Clearing Treatment is a go-to for acne and breakouts!) But oftentimes their products have these weird gimmicky ingredients like “Vizitight” or “Cosmiplexion,” or unnecessary add-ins like glitter.
It’s hard to take them seriously at times, so when I saw they launched a new mask called the BERRYGLOW Probiotic Recovery Face Mask that included a “Super Berry Blend,” I rolled my eyes a bit. But upon further inspection, there may be something worthwhile here and maybe I shouldn’t be so quick to judge!
Does Probiotic Skincare Have Any Benefits?
The human body contains about 100 trillion microorganisms, including bacterial and fungal species. The bacterial species are the most numerous. There are both “good” bacteria and “bad” bacteria. We often hear more about the “bad” bacteria. We rarely hear about “good” bacteria. This is because it is less urgent and the scientific and medical community still seem to have some room to grow regarding which strains should be introduced, how often, to whom, and for what.
With probiotics in skincare, scientists have identified a few strains of bacteria that are able to improve the appearance of the skin by essentially strengthening it, a term in dermatology known as “improved barrier function” (Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology). Unfortunately, this technology is rather new, so the number of independent, peer-reviewed studies not affiliated with any company is still limited. But it is promising!
This makes probiotic skincare a great option to combat dryness, and the BERRYGLOW Probiotic Recovery Face Mask is made to do just that!
What Exactly is a “Super Berry Blend” and Does it Do Anything?
The BERRYGLOW Probiotic Recovery Face Mask gets its name (in part) due to the “super berry blend” that is included in the formulation. Now I know this is mostly just a cutesy marketing tactic but underneath that, there may be some benefits to the berries used as part of this blend. Each one (blueberry, cranberry, and goji) boasts some serious antioxidant power which is great for fighting free radical damage.
Blueberry: Blueberries are rich in antioxidants which make their free radical fighting abilities great when it comes to anti-aging! And another study conducted with mice found that blueberries reduced the inflammation reaction after UV exposure (Journal of Pathology). More than that, they’ve found that blueberries help to improve and strengthen collagen in skin. They stop collagen breakdown, stabilize the collagen matrix, work against oxidative stress, and improve microcirculation. In a study of women aged 45-61, scientists found “that the topical mixture significantly improved cracking, creping, and thinning of mature skin when it was applied daily for three months (Life Extension Magazine).”
Cranberry: Cranberries have some very promising compounds that benefit the skin and have been found to have high antioxidant content. They have been shown to be a free radical scavenger with anthocyanins that help to inhibit lipoprotein oxidation in lab tests (Asian Pacific Journal of Nursing). In fact, the antioxidants in the flavonol glycosides have been found to be equal or superior to those in Vitamin E (Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry). And cranberry is known for possibly being the only fruit seed extract that has a perfect 1:1 ratio of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. It’s also got a healthy dose of Omega 9!
Goji Berry: Goji berries are often touted as a superfood thanks to their anti-inflammatory properties, but (even though research is limited) there is a reason to believe that they can be beneficial to the skin as well. The chemical make-up of a goji berry is ripe with antioxidant properties (see what I did there?). They also contain a compound called polysaccharides which give the berries stimulating properties that are beneficial for microcirculation.
I have said before on this blog many times that your skin and your digestive tract process things differently. So you will benefit from these berries MUCH more if you eat them rather than slather them on your face. However, there is also no harm in doing it either. Also, it makes this mask smell like a delicious berry smoothie which makes it more enjoyable to use.
Personal Use and Opinion
This is the kind of product you would use after getting home from a vacation or business trip. Any time I travel my skin gets very dull and dry from the plane so using a hydrating and soothing mask helps a lot. Like I mentioned earlier this mask has a nice berry smell and feels great when applied to the skin. Overall it was a pleasant experience, and my skin did feel soft and hydrated after using it.
Is this a product that is going to change your life? No. Are there other products out there that are able to hydrate your skin and provide antioxidant benefits? Yes. But sometimes you just want to treat yourself and have fun with your skincare routine and this is the perfect product for that occasion.
This is a nice-to-have product. Even though I am not totally sold on the benefits of rubbing berries on your face, it’s hydrating and enjoyable to use. I would definitely recommend it for those who travel frequently, or just want a night off to treat themselves. Plus, it smells great!
