I was really honored recently when I got to interview Dr. Debra Jaliman, M.D.  The author of the best-seller Skin Rules, Dr. Jaliman has been known as one of the top dermatologists in the nation, in both cosmetic and medical dermatology. She is celebrated for the customized care she provides.  Welcome, Dr. Jaliman!

Nicki:  So, first things first:  Why did you become a dermatologist?

Dr. Jaliman:  I became a dermatologist because I suffered from many skin conditions throughout my childhood from eczema, hives, to acne. I wanted to learn how to treat my own skin and create a brand of products that would tailor the needs of people with sensitive skin like mine.

What products do you recommend?

I would recommend Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Eye Cream because even though it contains retinol, it has hyaluronic acid so it doesn’t irritate or dry out the skin.

You should always be careful when applying crams and serums around the eyes. Pat gently onto the under- eye area and just below the brow, but never put any on the eyelid itself. Eyelid skin is so thin that the ingredients in products can actually penetrate to the eyeball beneath.

What is the right age to start advanced treatments like Botox, peels, and laser treatments?

Dr. Jaliman, M.D.

There is no specific age that women should start with Botox, peels, and laser treatments. It all depends on the condition of the skin. For example, young women with sun damage may need to start these procedures at an earlier age than an older patient who wears sunscreen everyday.

If someone has $100 to spend on beauty, should she buy products, or invest in a treatment?

If a woman has $100, she should spend it on products. They make a huge difference on the skin. When picking products, look at ingredients. Many inexpensive products such as cleansers have the same ingredients as the most expensive ones.

What is the best age-reversing procedure?

The best age reversing procedure is Thermage CPT which is a radio frequency treatment which stimulates collagen production with no downtime. There’s immediate tightening, optimal results are achieved after 6 months.

What beauty products do you use?

Dr. Jaliman recommends a vitamin C serum and sunscreen for day, and a retinol cream for night. I recommend waiting for FutureDerm Time-Release Retinol 0.5 on August 16- I’m really excited and couldn’t help but mention it here! 🙂

I use a mild cleanser, a broad spectrum sunscreen SPF 30, a vitamin C serum, and a retinol product at night.

Where do you see the future of dermatology?

The future of dermatology is very exciting. Technology is always changing. I’m very excited about new skin tightening procedures, new dermal fillers, and new fat reducing procedures.

What do you think of all-natural products?

Common culinary fruits.
While Dr. Jaliman likes the idea of all-natural products, she has yet to find one that works.

I eat all-natural foods and like the idea of all-natural products. However, I have yet to find an all-natural anti-aging product that works.

What do you think about parabens?

Methylparaben
I have never interviewed a dermatologist who did not either approve of or tolerate parabens in products.

I have no problems with parabens, I don’t think they cause cancer but some people may be allergic to them.

Any closing remarks, Dr. Jaliman?

Dermatology is one of the most exciting fields and I feel so lucky to be a part of it.

A special thanks to Dr. Debra Jaliman, M.D., and Kailtin Muchnok for this interview.
