The Jojoba Company Absolute Serum is finally an answer to the dozens of requests I get each week for a product that is efficacious as well as natural. The Jojoba Company Absolute Serum contains an innovative, unique combination of active ingredients, Silymarin and Carnosine, which are clinically proven to decrease frown lines by 24%, decrease crow’s feet by 27% and increase skin firmness by 19.5% after 4 weeks of treatment (source).  A potent age-defying serum, the Jojoba Company Absolute Serum may help to reduce the visible signs of lines and wrinkles and firm up the appearance of slackened skin naturally. The di-peptide carnosine in conjunction with hyaluronic acid and silymarin, a potent antioxidant from milk thistle, work together to aid collagen production and visibly refine skin smoothness and expression lines.

Key Ingredients include:

• 100% natural Australian jojoba – powerful antioxidant, naturally contains vitamins A, D & E and omega 6 & 9
essential fatty acids, naturally hydrating, carries nutritious plant actives deep into skin

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is proven to do everything from soften the skin to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is also great for all skin types, from dry to oily.

Yes, that’s right — I said “oily”! Because jojoba is so similar to our skin’s natural oil, it is thought that jojoba oil can “trick” the skin into thinking it’s producing enough oil, which helps balance oil production [Source: Acne.org]. “Jojoba oil is rich in natural fats that mimic those in the outer layer of the skin,” explains Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. “This means it can help the skin retain moisture and heal itself.” (source)

Scientific research confirms this. One study shows that use of jojoba oil shows modest swelling, indicative of moisture retention, in the stratum corneum (uppermost layer of skin) after use (Journal of Dermatological Science, 2008). Jojoba oil can also help to increase the penetration of other ingredients into the skin, something that may be useful for anti-acne treatments, such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or retinoids (Journal of the American Oil Chemists’ Society, 1984).

This means that jojoba oil is good for those with oily and acne-prone skin in small amounts. Just remember what I said above: Applying too much of any oil is not a good thing. Think a dime-size amount for the entire face.

Carnosine

Exfoliation, AHAs, chemical peels, retinoids: These agents are all well-established to make you look younger because of one thing — increased cellular turnover.

Your cells naturally turn over at a higher rate when you are in your teens and twenties. Cell turnover in the skin naturally decreases about 7% for each decade of life after age 20, which is one reason why exfoliation leads to such an instantly younger appearance.

Without getting all Bill Nye on you, the telomeres of your DNA shorten with each round of cellular replication. Eventually, the telomeres reach a shortened length known as the “Hayflick limit.” At this point, these cells start to die, and cell division occurs so a new generation of cells is available. The issue is that the Hayflick limit can be increased with certain nutrients, like Carnosine, as found in a 2004 study, indicating that Carnosine may be a unique agent in the fight against agent. Conversely, the Hayflick limit can also be decreased with stressors like emotional abuse, physical trauma, etc., as found in research published inBiochemical and Biophysical Communications.

We also do not definitively know how much telomeres shorten through each round of cellular division via AHA/BHA stimulation or exfoliation.  However, we do know that using skin care ingredients and taking care of one’s physical and mental health can elevate the Hayflick limit, so the integrity of the cell would be maintained longer.  Given the fact that AHAs and BHAs help nutrient skin care ingredients be absorbed into the skin better, it seems that perhaps more benefit than detriment can be gained from stimulating the cell cycle in the context of other beneficial skin care ingredients like Carnosine.

Furthermore, hanging onto dead skin cells may not be good either. It has been found that dead/dying cells secrete noxious chemicals that stimulate neighboring cells to undergo apoptosis and die as well. So you may not be doing yourself any favors by not using Carnosine! It’s a very unique way of fighting aging.

Vitamin E

According to the journal Skin Pharmacology and Physiology, vitamin E is one of the naturally produced antioxidant substances that protects against skin’s exposure to UV and environmental exposures to ozone. In fact, according to the article, vitamin E has been identified as the “predominant lipid-soluble antioxidant” in murine (mouse) and human skin.

According to a second research study, this by Packer and Valacchi, vitamin E is produced in the sebum of the skin, so it comes from the pores of the skin. As such, vitamin E shows a characteristic gradient in the stratum corneum (uppermost layer of skin), with lower levels being found towards the outer stratum corneum layers. As you age, your skin’s natural production of vitamin E slows, so supplementation with topical skin care agents is a great idea to maintain skin’s youthful moisturization levels.

Personal Use and Opinions

The Jojoba Company Absolute Serum is a fantastic product. Just 1-2 pumps are enough to spread over the face, neck and décolletage. I like to use mine at night, after cleansing.

Bottom Line

The Jojoba Company Absolute Serum is one of the best natural products I have found, with jojoba oil, carnosine, vitamin E, Ginseng, sodium hyaluronate, and many other anti-aging ingredients. It’s a must-have!
