Sometimes there are things in life that are game-changers: Post-It Notes. Starbucks. Smart phones.
In skincare, there are a few things like that: Retinoids, vitamins C and E, AHAs, peptides, amino acids, antioxidants, niacinamide, and sunscreen. And, dare I say it, red LED lights.
It may sound too good to be true, but substantial evidence shows that red LED lights can actually reduce fine lines and wrinkles. A 2005 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy demonstrated that red LED light reduced periorbital (around-the-eye) wrinkles by 81% after nine treatments over the course of 12 weeks. Another study from the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology found that the use of LEDs significantly increased collagen and elastin production, thus resulting in firmer, younger-looking skin over time.
Best of all, red LED light can be used in conjunction with your existing skin care regimen, with little or no increased risk of irritation. In fact, red LED light may make your skin more tolerant of skincare products. The reason? It is believed light absorption increases cellular metabolism, which may in turn increase the efficacy of anti-aging ingredients.
Here’s why the Joovv Light may be a game-changer.
The Sheer Size is Amazing
Although I’ve advocated small handheld devices in the past, the Joovv Light is a full 4 ft. by 2.5 ft. Your face, body, chest, and whole body (if you wish) can benefit from red LED therapy in just one treatment.
The Joovv Light May Help Prevent Unwanted Wrinkles
Daily use of the Joovv Light may help you prevent unwanted wrinkles with light therapy. Specifically, red LED light has been shown to reduce the wrinkles resulting from stress and to fight the signs of aging by promoting new collagen production. This increased collagen will in turn help to prevent deep wrinkles from forming, particularly when used before the “tipping point”, that may occur in your mid-thirties to forties.
Is it Safe?
While non-ablative lasers and LED phototherapy are both very popular skin rejuvenation methods, only LED phototherapy has been further developed for use in the home. This is because LED phototherapy repairs sun damage and increases collagen and elastin production with less potential side effects than lasers. In fact, while lasers are contraindicated in many patients with darker skin tones due to potential irregularities in pigmentation and scarring, LED phototherapy is generally considered safe in such patients.
How Does It Compare to Other Lasers on the Market?
The Joovv Light is what I estimate to be about 1000 times more powerful than other tools currently on the market. Most handheld devices have a circular shape and are 1.44 inches in diameter with uses 3mm LEDs. The Joovv Light is a full 4 ft. by 2.5 ft. (48 inches by 30 inches), which is about 1000x more surface area. I’m not kidding — you turn this thing on, and the entire front room of our FutureDerm office lit up!
After several weeks of using the Joovv Light, I think that the start of forehead lines seem to be decreasing. I also think that my face looks like it has better contours, although we don’t not have clinical studies to support this.
The Joovv Light should be used for at least five days a week for eight weeks to see results. For most red LEDs, the suggested maintenance treatment schedule is 2 – 3 times per week. However, it can be used for longer periods of time. I personally recommend doing it daily. This is a wonderful investment in my skin!
