Josie Maran products are known for incorporating the ever-popular argan oil, and this time, she’s done it again with Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee, Poppy Paradise ($22, josiemarancosmetics.com). This cream-gel blush hybrid uses coconut water to cool and rehydrate skin while providing the antioxidant effects of argan oil.
Cocos nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Juice
You’ve heard about the benefits of using coconut oil as part of your daily beauty regimen, but coconut water is also good for your skin. Coconut water hydrates skin while increasing its elasticity and decreasing overall roughness (Molecules, 2009). In a study published by the Sabinsa Corporation, a patented coconut water called Cococin™ improved elasticity and skin tone of the subjects. Coconut water also contains kinetin, an effective anti-aging ingredient. However, it is not a potent source of kinetin, so I wouldn’t expect it to solve all of your problems overnight (Molecules, 2009).

Argania spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil
Argan oil contains oleic and linoleic acids, two fatty acids with medium-to-long chains that are able to deeply penetrate skin, making them some of the best emollients for skin as they also increase its permeability (Dermatitis, 1992). Argan oil also contains a high proportion of vitamin E, which helps protect against photodamage and collagen degradation while also protecting the skin barrier (Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2005).
According to dermatologist Dr. Leslie Baumann, M.D., glycerin is similar to a natural moisturizing factor (NMF) because it allows the stratum corneum to retain water. This has been confirmed in numerous studies, including a five-year study testing two products with a high glycerin content; researchers found the two glyercin creams restored dry skin to normal moisture levels (and kept skin moisturized for longer) better than the other products (Dry Skin and Moisturizers, 2006). Another study found that a 20% glycerin formula increased skin moisture in comparison to a control group after ten days of use (International Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2006).
Overall Rating: 100%
Based on ingredients alone, I like that Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee, Poppy Paradise has three great moisturizing ingredients, especially since I’m prone to dry spots on my cheeks. I was a little intimidated by the texture (I’m typically a powder blush gal), but I really like how easy it is to apply and build the appropriate amount of color, especially since it lasted all day. After using this daily for the past five days, I can guarantee that I’ll be buying this blush again.
