Winter is coming and you know what that means… chapped lips, dry skin, and static-y hair. Every time the cold temperatures kick in my hair gets dry and unruly. Most of the time I end up tossing it into a bun because I can’t be bothered to manage it. I was excited to give the Moisture Collection from Keratherapy a try because I know in a few months my hair will be in desperate need of the extra moisture. I used the shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner, and award-winning masque! Here’s what I thought:
Benefits of Keratin
Before we get into the review, let’s talk about keratin as it is the star ingredient in each of Keratherapy’s products. Keratin is a structural protein found in our hair that is built by 18 amino acids. But, it is also an effective ingredient in hair products that will help to strengthen and add shine to your hair. Keratin treatments are available in salons, and they make your hair look like it’s been in a shampoo ad! It is a high sulfur high fibrous protein that can be nourished either naturally through diet or with the use of keratin hair products.
Excessive heat styling can destroy the natural keratin in your hair which is what causes damage and frizz. When keratin is used in a haircare product or treatment it binds to the hair to smooth the surface of the hair and prevent frizz. According to Dr. Tonya McKay Becker, PhD., a writer for naturallycurly.com, keratin in products reacts with the natural keratin in your hair to connect split hairs, essentially repairing them. Another bonus to using keratin: it adds body and shine to your hair. It does so by filling in the gaps between the natural cross-linked keratin in your hair.
First things first, shampoo! I tend to only wash my hair every other day so I swapped my usual shampoo out for the keratin-infused Moisture Shampoo from Keratherapy. The texture is your typical shampoo texture, and I’m a huge fan of the scent. It’s not too overpowering and doesn’t linger. It smells clean and refreshing. I always know when shampoo is over-cleansing my hair because when I rinse it out the strands feel too squeaky clean. I’m happy to report that was not the case here! My hair still felt like it was in good shape after rinsing this out. This is due not only to the keratin but also to the aloe vera. Aloe vera is actually really great for your hair as it helps to soothe the scalp. Overall big fan of this one!
Follow up the shampoo with conditioner, duh, and the keratin-infused Moisture Conditioner from Keratherapy was lovely. My hair felt hydrated and healthy without being weighed down as it gets sometimes when I use rich products. Same scent and texture as the shampoo so no issue there. The conditioner contains one of my favorite oils, jojoba, which leaves the hair soft and easy to brush through.
Deep Conditioning Masque
The Deep Conditioning Masque was the product I was most looking forward to using as I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. This masque smells the same as the rest of the products in this line and has a very thick texture. I reserve my mask days for Sunday so I only use this once a week, and that’s what I would recommend for anyone who is just starting to use this. It is very thick and if you’re not careful and use too much or use it too often, your hair can get a little heavy and weighed down. A little goes a long way and when used properly it makes your hair feel so soft and light. The secret here is the wheat germ oil which is rich in fatty acids and helps to soften the hair.
And finally, we have the Leave-In Conditioner. I am not a huge fan or user of leave-in conditioners so I was surprised that this became my favorite product from the line. I apply a couple of sprays after getting out of the shower and run a brush through it. I find that it makes my hair look very shiny once it is dried. (I always let my hair air-dry, as I try to avoid heat as much as I can.) I wouldn’t recommend using this if you’ve done the masque because it might be a little too much, but for just your regular washes it’s great! You can also use it on dry hair so if you’re ever feeling like your hair could use a little shine in between washes, give this a shot.
Overall, I really enjoyed this line! My hair is noticeably more soft and shiny. If you’re someone who has very dry hair or gets dry hair in the winter I would recommend giving the Keratherapy Moisture Collection a shot!
