Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Cleansing Oil is the latest new product from Kiehl’s.

I’ll be honest, the best thing about being a skincare blogger is all of the free amazing products I get to consider for review. The worst thing, however, is that some of the products, or combinations therein, create skin issues. Namely, clogged pores, blackheads, occasional breakouts, and a residue that can make it hard to feel like I’ve gotten my face completely “clean”. Combine this with skin that can get sensitive, and I’m not going to be overloading my skin with charcoal, salicylic acid, and other traditional pore-cleansing treatments anytime soon.

That said, Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Cleansing Oil is designed to completely cleanse the skin without drying it out or leaving any residue. The main ingredient is ethylhexyl palmitate, a derivative of palm oil lipid that is known for its mild, skin-smoothing properties. This ester will leave a “dry-slip” feel on the skin, and allow other ingredients to absorb. Following it up is corn oil, Zea mays germ oil, which can bind to oily residue on the skin, and which may also act as something of an antioxidant (Food Chemistry). A slew of other silicones and fatty acids help to bind to greasy residue left on the skin, but still leave it feeling clean.

What makes Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Cleansing Oil an exceptional product is as much what is not in it as what is. Although many cleansing oils have oil solvents, making the skin feel greasy afterwards, this has mostly a silicone and ester base, leaving the skin feel more clean and soft, but still transporting the grease away!

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Cleansing Oil smells exactly like the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil, but the texture is lighter. When you wash the oil off, it comes off without feeling any residue, unlike most other oil cleansers I’ve tried. That said, I still use the Japanese skin care method, where I use the oil first, and then either a foam or gel-based cleanser, and then move onto toning or essences or serums (depending on how lazy I’m feeling on a given night!).

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Cleansing Oil is an exceptionally good oil cleanser, with the ability to remove oil-based residue without leaving your face feeling like an oily mess. It’s a smart addition to any skin care junkie’s regimen.
