.Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye Cream is a play to extend a pretty sensational line of products. As I’ve discussed in past reviews, I’m not a fan of their Midnight Recovery Concentrate Serum because I feel it does little more than hydrate, but I am a huge fan of their Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Cleanser.
Insofar as Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye Cream goes, it is unfortunately more in the category of the Serum than the Cleanser: I don’t feel that it does much other than hydrate. That said, one of its major ingredients, sunflower seed oil, is a pretty powerful emollient. The secret to its efficacy is that sunflower seed oil contains about 60% linoleic acid, which hydrates as it is both incorporated into skin lipids and prevents water loss from the skin. Sunflower seed oil has been shown to be even more effective in hydrating than olive oil: According to a very small study (3 individuals!), application of sunflower seed oil to the individuals’ right forearms for 2 weeks markedly increased the amount of lecithin in the patients’ skin. In addition, the rate of transepidermal water loss was significantly lowered, and the patients’ scaly skin lesions disappeared – results not found with olive oil (Journal of Investigative Dermatology, 1974). The authors speculate that the reason is that sunflower seed oil is a natural source of linoleic acid, whereas olive oil is a source of oleic acid.
Sunflower seed oil also has mild antibacterial properties, as infants receiving a daily skin treatment of sunflower oil were found to be 41% less likely to develop infections in one small study (The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, 2004). Lastly, sunflower seed oil is a source of vitamin E (Journal of the American Oil Chemists’ Society, 2006).
That said, if the skin under your eyes is dry, go for it with Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye Cream. On the other hand, if you’re looking for products to treat undereye fine lines/wrinkles, look for ingredients like retinoids or AHAs or peptides (for night) and vitamins C and E (for day). If you’re looking for products to treat undereye puffiness, look for ingredients like green tea or caffeine. And if you’re looking for products with an instant lift, look for ingredients like diisostearyl isomers and egg whites. But if what you’re really after is simply hydration, a little prevention, and nothing else, then Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye Cream is a good product for you.
