So fairly recently I was sent a sample of Lara Beauty Polishing Microdermabrasion Scrub ($24.00, LaraBeauty.com). I must admit I was a little skeptical: any time I’ve tried microdermabrasion in the past, I’ve almost always had to compensate with moisturizers for a few days. (And occasionally with a helmet…kidding).
Yet Lara Beauty Polishing Microdermabrasion Scrub was different. When I applied the cream, it feels as though I was rubbing my face with sandpaper. Yet, it left my skin incredibly soft and smooth, even with a little bit of that shine on my nose I hadn’t seen since I was 19 or so.
So of course I had to delve into what exactly makes Lara Beauty Polishing Microdermabrasion Scrub so different for sensitive skin. It turns out the product is actually half scrub, half soothing ingredients including shea butter, avocado seed oil, grapeseed oil, hempseed oil, and vitamin E.
Shea butter has been shown to reduce water loss on skin by replenishing lost lipids (British Journal of Dermatology, 2008). I always thought avocados are more tasty than skin care material, but it turns out avocados have hydrating properties when applied to the skin topically (Archives of Dermatological Research, 1995) and may improve the skin’s defensive barrier functions (International Journal of Cosmetic Science). Hempseed oil has recently gained popularity with the increased interest in anti-inflammatory fatty acids; unlike many other formulations, hempseed has a beneficial ratio of 3:1 omega-6 linoleic acid:omega-3 alpha-linoleic acid (Modin, 2011).
All I know is Lara Beauty Polishing Microdermabrasion Scrub leaves your skin feeling soft and amazing, and doesn’t irritate like sensitive skin like the vast majority of the scrubs out there. Two caveats: One, even though it’s rich in hydrators, don’t over-scrub; a small amount, rubbed in a circular motion and rinsed once per week, is sufficient. Two, even though it’s great for my sensitive skin, start with a small patch of skin to be sure how your skin will react. Even better: talk to your dermatologist first!
