Maybelline Instant Age Rewind® The Eraser Dark Circles Review

Share Article

Late nights, early deadlines, aging parents, new babies – it seems there’s always a reason dark circles are accumulating under our eyes.  In that spirit, Maybelline introduced new Instant Age Rewind® The Eraser Dark Circles with Haloxyl and a micro-correcting applicator, promising to erase in a more targeted, more complete fashion than other concealers.

Do “The Test” to See if It Will Work For You

To see the cause of your dark circles, do the following test, designed by dermatologist Dr. Heidi Waldorf, M.D.:  Apply pressure using the pad of your finger to the circle or shadow under your eye.  See which of the following occurs:

  • If it disappears, your problem is due to blood pooling under the eyes, and Instant Age Rewind® The Eraser Dark Circles, with Haloxyl (releasing darkly pigmented bilirubin and iron from the blood under the skin) is likely to work for you.
  • If the color doesn’t disappear, the darkness is caused by excess pigment.  A product like LumixylTM, a potent tyrosinase inhibitor, would treat your existing dark circles better than Haloxyl.
  • If the shadow forms at the inside corner of your eye, where a tear would flow, it’s probably due to a deep tear trough.  It is best to see a dermatologist.

All About Haloxyl®

Haloxyl® is a formulation that reduces the appearance of dark circles by calming inflammation and facilitating the release of bilirubin and iron from skin tissues.  In clinical studies using Haloxyl, 60% of participants noticed visible lessening in the appearance of dark undereye circles within two months of twice daily use, according to the textbook Formulating, Packaging, and Marketing of Natural Cosmetic Products.

While this cosmetic product contains Haloxyl® in a concentration not released by the company, it does not appear to be as concentrated as in targeted eye creams like Eyliplex-2 or Dr. Denese Triple Strength Eye Smoother.  Of course, 9 times out of 10, you can’t expect to get the same results from a cosmetic as a skin care product, no matter what the promises.  The purpose of a cosmetic is primarily to conceal, whereas a skin care product needs to improve the skin itself.

Very Light, “Barely There” Concealer

Unfortunately, as a concealer, I’ve also found better than Instant Age Rewind® The Eraser Dark Circles.  For one, the coverage is exceptionally light, so unless you are fourteen years old (or buying a first concealer for your fourteen-year-old), this probably isn’t a good option!

For another, the product applicator gets cruddy and bacteria-filled over time unless you clean it regularly, as one of my favorite bloggers, Musings of a Muse, points out in her blog.

Bottom Line:  Cheap Way to Try Haloxyl®

If you’re on a budget, Instant Age Rewind® The Eraser Dark Circles is probably the cheapest way I can think of get a concealer and to try Haloxyl®, which is typically available in other products priced $30 and up.

Truth be told, though, Haloxyl® is in higher concentration in most of the other products, so keep that in mind before purchasing.  I personally would not advise buying Instant Age Rewind® The Eraser Dark Circles for use as a concealer, either – it simply does not provide enough coverage for most women.

Ingredients in Haloxyl® : water, glycerin, steareth-20, N-hydroxysuccinimide, chrysin, palmitoyl Oligopeptide, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7, Chlorhexidine Digluconate (20% in water): 1%, Potassium Sorbate: 0.1%.
