For years, I have been in love with the Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner ($22.00, Amazon.com). The formula was so pigmented and long-wearing, I had to use eye makeup remover three times to get it off! Most of the time, I’d just let it go after one eye makeup removal attempt, leaving me with sexily smudged eyes come morning.
Unfortunately, the big issue for me with the original Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner was the time. To properly apply the gel eyeliner meant getting the right amount of product on the brush, stabilizing my elbow on the counter, steadily drawing a fine line across each eyelid, and waiting for it to dry. Like so many other people in our time-crunched, activity-packed society, I simply didn’t have the time during the week, resorting to eye pencils I’d have to reapply 4-5 times throughout the day. I could only use my Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner on the weekends.
Yet this month, Bobbi Brown answered my prayers with the brand-new Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Eye Pencil ($24.00, Sephora.com). The pencil has a slightly different formula than the gel cream – see below – but wears equally as well. One application takes me from wake-up to 5 PM, and then another takes me from 5 PM to the time I go to sleep. It’s that amazing.
What about the ingredients make Bobbi Brown eyeliners so special?
Perhaps, though, the real ticket here is the propylene carbonate. When cosmetic chemists are formulating color products, there must always be a solvent, or solution into which some of the other ingredients are dissolved. Propylene carbonate is a wonderful solvent because it creates a uniform consistency and increases the toughness of all of the other ingredients. Other color cosmetics products typically use other solvents, like DMSO, because it is significantly cheaper than propylene carbonate. However, in Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Eye Pencil, it makes the formula smooth and incredibly long-lasting.
Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Eye Pencil is one of the few products I know of without a drugstore equivalent – at least for now. As of April 2012, it’s the best on the market, and trust me, I’m a bit of an eyeliner ho – I’ll try them all at least once. Despite the off-color joke, I truly do believe Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Eye Pencil is the best on the market for highly-pigmented, long-lasting color right now.
