NARS Makeover, Part 2: Jen and the Smoky Eye

Share Article

As you might remember from yesterday’s post, last week was a rough one for Natalie and me. Plans I had been looking forward to for weeks fell through due to things outside of my control, and it really put a damper on my general mood for the week. Thankfully, I had Friday to look forward to, with the hopes of NARS makeup artist Mo giving me the pep-in-my-step look that I so desperately needed.

Jen: Browns, Blending, and the Baby Blues

I’m just your average liquid eyeliner kind of gal, so I wanted Mo to take me a little out of my shell, and, I must say, she rose to the challenge quite well. Suddenly my blue eyes were so much more blue, shrouded in a smoky haze of brown, taupe, bronze, and orange, an unlikely combo that I wouldn’t have thought of myself.

Face: A Lesson in Contouring

One of the things I’ve been curious about for a while now is how to contour, and Mo was more than happy to teach me. She started with the NARS Pro-Prime™ Light Optimizing Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 15 ($34, amazon.com) and then applied the NARS Concealer ($23, amazon.com) in Chantilly as a highlighter between my brows and along the ridges of my nose, cheekbones, and chin (you can see it on the left side of the sketch above).  She then applied the NARS Concealer in Café ($21.46, amazon.com) to contour around the edges of my forehead, my nose, and under my cheekbones (again, see sketch above).

After blending, Mo applied the NARS Radiant Cream Compact Foundation ($38, amazon.com) in Deauville, a new product from NARS that can be used either wet or dry. It’s probably not the best for oily skin, but it should work rather well for dry skin. The first ingredient is the heaviest of silicones, dimethicone, which should lock in moisture. It also contains sodium hyaluronate, a sodium salt form of hyaluronic acid, which attracts moisture from the surrounding environment to hydrate your precious skin (Simple Skin Beauty).  Mo then set the look with the NARS Light Reflecting Loose Setting Powder ($34, sephora.com).

Cheeks: A Sun-Kissed Glow

Mo used more of a bronze, orange-y look for my cheeks to complement what would soon be the extensive masterpiece formally known as my eyes. She used a blend of the NARS Cheek Palette ($41, sephora.com) in Soulshine on the apples of my cheeks and used the NARS Bronzing Powder ($36, amazon.com) in Laguna underneath of my cheekbones. She finished with a quick blend of the NARS The Multiple ($39, amazon.com) in Copacabana as a highlighter.

Eyes: Blending, Blending, Blending

Mo pulled me deep from within the depths of my comfort zone by applying a wide range of eye shadows to create a sultry, smoky eye. She first applied the NARS Soft Touch Shadow Pencil ($24, sephora.com) in Skorpios as a base, then pressed the NARS Single Eye Shadow ($24, amazon.com) in Galapagos onto my lid to give it some more dimension. She then blended NARS The Multiple ($39, amazon.com) in Puerto Vallarta above my crease, finally blending in the oh-so-surprising NARS Single Eye Shadow in Persia ($24, amazon.com) to give it an orange-y feel.

Finally, with a swipe of the NARS Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner ($24, amazon.com) in Via De’Martelli, the whole eye was pulled together.

Lips: A Subtle Shimmer

Mo finished my makeover with a layer of the NARS Satin Lip Pencil ($25, amazon.com) in Floralies, followed by the NARS Lip Gloss ($25/each, amazon.com) in both Dolce Vita and Sweet Revenge. I’m not typically a fan of lip gloss, but the gloss wasn’t sticky and the overall look of my lips was subtle, so I didn’t feel like I had too much going on with my eyes.

Bottom Line

Mo used a total of sixteen NARS products on me for a total cost of $476.46. This definitely isn’t a look I would wear during the day or to work (no matter how cool my job is), but it was a perfect sultry look fit for going out later that night. My eyes were the bluest I’ve ever seen them, and I’m not sure if this is a look that I could recreate with my own unsteady hand, but Mo definitely taught me some tricks that I can easily translate into my own look.
