Nexxus Frizz Defy Frizz Protection Conditioner Review

Reviews, Skin Care

Spring often means rain. For us curly haired girl this can mean a lot of frizz and days of ponytails and buns. Nexxus Frizz Defy Frizz Protection Conditioner ($11.34) claims to reduce frizz by over 80% all day long, promising us stylish hair without the hassle.

All the Rage: Argan Oil

Argan oil has plenty of fatty acids, great for skin and hair.
Argan oil has plenty of fatty acids, great for skin and hair.

Argan oil seems to be in everything now, and with good reason. It’s a highly prized oil and one of the most expensive in the world. That’s because it does incredible things for skin and hair.

One of the reasons this oil is beneficial is that it contains two beneficial fatty acids, linoleic and oleic acid, as well as antioxidant polyphenols (European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology).

Another reason? UV protection. When your hair gets exposed to sunlight unprotected, all kinds of damage happens, including the breakdown of the protein that protects your hair in the first place. Antioxidants in hair care products have been shown to help mitigate this damage (Journal of Cosmetic Science). In fact, argan oil has been found to have some pretty significant UV-protective properties (Agricultural and Food Chemistry).

Crazy for Coconut Extract

Coconut has also been a super popular ingredient in hair care recently because it's so moisturizing.

Coconut extract is also a star ingredient in this conditioner. Coconut extract makes for a gentle emollient that helps to soften hair (Indian Pediatrics). It can help maintain the moisture lost in your locks and stops the protein-loss associated with damage (Journal of Cosmetic Science).

Better yet? This too has UV-protective qualities, up to SPF 20 (without specification of UVA or UVB). Since some of your conditioner remains in your hair, this along with argan oil could help to keep hair from some of the damage of UV-irradiation (Pharmacognosy Review).

Silicones: Don’t Fear Them

It’s perfectly reasonable to avoid silicones if you use very, very mild surfactants or co-wash. But if you wash your hair regularly, they could be a really good idea.

The nice thing about silicones, particularly when you have curly hair, because it improves both wet and dry brushing (Journal for the Society of Cosmetic Chemists). In fact, they’ve been found to improve combing force 20,000 times better than distearyldimonium chloride (Handbook of Cosmetic Science and Technology). They also help to strengthen hair and stop heat damage (which can be a problem for women who style their hair daily) (HAPPI).

While they can build up, the more heavy-duty surfactants can help to get rid of them pretty easily, so don’t worry too much (Skin Pharmacology and Physiology).

Personal Use and Opinion

nexxus4I liked the way Nexxus Frizz Defy Frizz Protection Conditioner smelled. It was nutty, citrusy and lightly floral. All nexus products seem to have a similar smell. The conditioner was relatively thick but it did not have much slip, which was disappointing. When I had the conditioner in my hair, my hair was very heavy like it had been drenched in product. I rinsed it out and my hair felt slightly more moisturized than it was after washing it. I wasn’t that impressed with the moisture of the conditioner.

I then went on to style my hair. I applied heat protectant and leave in conditioner and blow-dried my hair. I then flat ironed it and put it in a bun. I proceeded through my usual weekly routine, running to class, work, and internship and working out.

My hair stayed relatively frizz free-even without me pin curling it every night. This is usually unheard of with my kinky curly hair. If I don’t pin curl it nightly and apply heavy products I will have a frizzy fur ball mess on my head. After trying this conditioner I would consider using it more regularly. I don’t think it’s the most moisturizing but it is good at keeping away frizz. For girls who need more moisture I was suggest using a moisturizing pre-shampoo treatment and using this as your final conditioner.

Bottom Line

With argan oil, coconut extract, and plenty of silicones, Nexxus Frizz Defy Frizz Protection Conditioner could definitely be a savior for curly girls in the spring time. I found that even without some of my normal routine and in the rainy city I live in, I didn’t suffer from a lot of frizz.
