Every once in a while, you come across an exciting out-of-the-box skincare product.
That’s the case with Olecea Pearl Activating Serum. With 5 growth factors, numerous peptides, sodium hyaluronate, vitamin E, and even plant stem cells (love ’em or not, they’re not going to harm anything), this is a great serum at $80 for anyone who wants to try new technologies in skincare without the usual $150+ price tag.
If there was a skin care ingredient I would stock up on in the next decade, it would be growth factors.
Why? Well, in my opinion, skin cell stimulating growth factors are as close to a drug as it gets. Growth factors in skin care have been shown in peer-reviewed, independent studies to enhance wound healing following dermatological treatments with lasers or dermatologic surgery, reduce wrinkling, and increase skin smoothness.
In a 2007 study in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, subjects used a human growth factor-containing cream on half of their face for sixty days. After the 60-day period, 83% of the subjects showed an improved average wrinkle score in the eye area, while 50% showed an improved average wrinkle score in the mouth area.
The results are dramatic from using growth factors. I would be shocked if they are not more regulated (and hence less available in less potent concentrations over-the-counter) in the future.
Though these photos are all from their parent companies, the results are dramatic and appear (at least to me) not to be edited. Before-and-afters of growth factor products are available from AQ Skin Solutions, Regenica, and Skinmedica. However, what’s great about Olecea is that it has each of the 5 major growth factors: EGF, IGF-1, Acidic FGF, Basic FGF, and VEGF.
One of my favorite skincare ingredients is sodium hyaluronate, which is one of the natural moisturizing factors (NMFs) found in the skin. Together with lipids, NMFs keep skin from losing water, maintaining skin’s young, smooth, non-flaky appearance. In fact, a 2000 study by Sakai et. al cited by Paula Begoun, “the Cosmetics Cop,” found that a decrease in the lipid and NMF content of the skin leads to surface roughness, flaking, fine lines, and a tight, uncomfortable feeling. Within the skin, biologically-formed NMFs are made of amino acids and their metabolites, and are found exclusively inside the cells of the uppermost layer of the skin (the stratum corneum). Natural NMFs maintain moisture in the skin, even under low humidity, and provide an optimal environment for enzymatic functions (Baumann).
Plant Stem Cells
Plant stem cells are controversial in skincare, but the controversy isn’t over their safety. Rather, it is over whether or not they work. In truth, small but significant changes have been detected in human skin after using plant stem cells. After two weeks of using a product containing these plant stem cell extracts, consumers have seen a significant reduction in the depth of crow’s feet wrinkles by 8 percent; the reduction in the depth of crow’s feet after four weeks reached 15 percent (Inside Cosmeceuticals, 2009). Would I buy a serum exclusively for plant stem cells? No, probably not. But would I buy a serum rich in growth factors and peptides that just happened to also have plant stem cells, like Olecea? Absolutely.
If you are the type of person who wants to try the latest and greatest in skin care, then I definitely recommend Olecea Pearl Activating Serum. It’s a superior serum with all of the proven “newbies” in skincare, and I stand by it strongly.
