Olivella Lavender Bath and Shower Gel ($10.95, Olivellaline.com) is one of my favorite new Spring 2015 products. This innovative bath and shower gel is richly scented with lavender and infused with 100% extra virgin olive oil.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Olive oil is one of the best ingredients to use in the bath or shower. The idea here is that the olive oil simultaneously softens the skin as an emollient, and locks in moisture as a mild occlusive agent. You may remember a few years ago, when skin care companies attempted to produce “in-shower moisturizers” with petrolatum or mineral oil; well, the olive oil in Olivella Lavender Bath and Shower Gel does the same thing, without any of the negative hype surrounding petrolatum or mineral oil.

When applied to the skin, olive oil has the ability to be mildly UV protective (Carcinogenesis, Toxicology) and potentially even anti-carcinogenic (The Lancet Oncology).

What grants olive oil these special abilities is that it includes the following compounds naturally:

  • Resveratrol, a natural protector of cellular activity;
  • Squalene, a natural hydrating agent;
  • Antioxidants, including three classes of polyphenols that are called simple phenols, secoridoids, and lignans.

Olive oil is also safe. Olive oil is potentially a very weak irritant when applied to skin affected by eczema or certain circulatory issues (Contact Dermatitis, 1997). However, other than this, the safety profile of olive oil is considered to be quite high.

Lavender

Lavender

First used by the ancient Greeks and Romans, lavender oil is generally recognized in holistic medicine as an antibacterial, anti-fungal, carminative (smooth muscle-relaxing), sedative, and anti-depressive agent (Phytotherapy Research, 2002).

Lavender has been shown to exhibit some antioxidant activity when applied directly to the skin, effectively diminishing UV-induced reactive oxidative species generation (ROS) in the skin of rats (Photochemistry and Photobiology, 2005).

Other reported benefits of lavender oil include a reduction in symptoms of eczema and moderate psoriasis, though the evidence of this is somewhat limited.

In addition, many enjoy lavender’s aromatic properties, finding it to be calming and soothing. I personally love to take a bath before bed, and I find few things more relaxing than a cup of hot tea, a stack of books and magazines, and a bathtub filled with Olivella Lavender Bath and Shower Gel.

Personal Use and Opinions

Olivella Lavender Bath and Shower Gel is an amber-colored liquid. It is richly scented like lavender.

When applying Olivella Lavender Bath and Shower Gel in the shower, it does not create a lot of foam or bubbles. Instead, it cleanses gently and produces a small amount of lather.

When using Olivella Lavender Bath and Shower Gel in the bath, it gives this beautiful burst of lavender, which I find to be luxurious, calming, and soothing. It smells wonderful and leaves the skin feeling silky smooth.

Bottom Line

If you are looking for a luxurious, calming bathtime bath and shower gel that is also beneficial for your skin, look no further than Olivella Lavender Bath and Shower Gel. This beautifully fragrant bath and shower gel truly delivers softer, smoother skin, with olive oil, antioxidants, and calming lavender extract.
