There are ingredients that are great for everyone, like my “big 5″ (retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids, antioxidants, niacinamide, and sunscreen). And then there are formulations with very high doses of potent ingredients recommended most for those 40-50 and up: Relistase, Syn-Hycan, and peptides like Syn-Tacks and Matrixyl 3000. These ingredients are shown to slowly increase collagen production over time, resulting in improved elasticity and wrinkles.
Your Best Face Control ($160.00, FutureDerm.com/Shop) has an advanced formula with a combination of ingredients I recommend for everyone (vitamin E, alpha lipoic acid, spin traps), and a wham-bam-pow! dose of peptides designed for aging skin, including Relistase, Syn-Hycan, and peptides like Syn-Tacks and Matrixyl 3000. What Your Best Face Says
According to Your Best Face:
You’ll love what Control does for skin’s elasticity! Control helps you get back the fresh skin and elasticity you crave. The updated formula in Control takes a huge leap forward for even better results.
This is our best wrinkle fighter for your journey to better skin. It takes time. Wrinkles and sun damage accumulate over years and need two things for a turnaround — great skincare ingredients as part of a healthy routine & lifestyle and time.
Control treats your skin to our collection of cutting-edge rejuvenators that go to work on the effects of sun, stress and time. With regular use, your skin looks less dull, elasticity is restored and wrinkles and sun damage begin to fade. Pair in routine with Prep Microdermabrasion Cream for accelerated results.
popular with: 40-somethings & up and anyone with sun damaged skinbest to use: daytime
Relistase: Inhibits elastase.
Found in higher concentration than anything except water, Relistase is a peptide that is designed to increase skin firmness and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in at least two months of daily use (Lipotec).
In your skin, there is an enzyme, elastase, that breaks down your collagen. Elastase activity increases naturally with age, but it also increases with exposure to environmental toxins, stress, and other factors (Journal of Investigative Dermatology, 1988).
Relistase is designed to inhibit elastase. By taking down the activity of the enzyme that breaks down collagen, you theoretically will be able to hang onto the collagen that you produce for longer, similar to when you were younger.
At this time, there are no peer-reviewed, independent research studies I could find of the efficacy of the ingredient, but it appears to hold great promise — especially in combination with the other ingredients in Your Best Face Control.
Syn-Hycan: Boosts hyaluronan, decorin, lumican.
Loss of skin firmness is one very visible sign of aging. SYN®-HYCAN helps to fight sagging skin by boosting hyaluronan content and increasing the expression of decorin and lumican. Both activities of SYN®-HYCAN work nicely together: Fresh hyaluronan and stronger collagen fibrils result in a visible remodeling effect and a firmer skin (The Center for Chem).
Syn-Tacks: Increased cell communication in the skin
SYN®-TACKS, a peptide combination, stimulates the proteins of the Dermal-Epidermal Junction (DEJ). It thereby improves skin tonicity, cellular cohesion and anti-wrinkle action, enabling molecular communication within the skin. Clinical investigations, in vitro and in vivo, have shown significant skin improvement. It is offered as glycerine-based aqueous solution, easily incorporated into the aqueous phase of a formulation even at elevated temperatures (The Center for Chem).
Matrixyl 3000: Designed to decrease wrinkles
Your Best Face Control is also replete with another favorite ingredient, Matrixyl 3000®. At the 2002 World Congress of Dermatology in Paris, Matrixyl 3000®was reported to decrease wrinkle depth by 68% and wrinkle density by 47% with twice-daily use over the course of six months. Matrixyl 3000® demonstrates this firming ability by stimulating fibroblasts to produce collagen and increasing hyaluronic acid production in the skin. Notable results in clinical studies have been achieved with minimum Matrixyl 3000® concentrations of 2%. Although Your Best Face does not reveal the concentration of Matrixyl 3000® in their products, its high placement on the ingredients list suggests it is close, if not there.
Vitamins C and E
As you all know, I’m a huge fan of using vitamins C and E together.
Though Your Best Face Control does not contain 15% or more vitamin C or 2% or more vitamin E, the benefits of the ingredients should still be discussed. According to Dr. Leslie Baumann’s Cosmetic Dermatology textbook, vitamin C and vitamin E are network antioxidants that have been found to synergistically enhance the power of one another. (When one antioxidant is depleted, it can essentially “borrow” an electron from the other antioxidant to renew itself, and vice versa). Vitamins C and E as L-ascorbic acid and tocopheryl acetate have also been reported by Djerassi et. al. to prevent the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines. Vitamin C and vitamin E have also been shown to enhance the photoprotective effects of sunscreen, as vitamin C has been reported to enhance UVA protection, whereas vitamin E is more effective against UVB radiation.
Lastly, vitamin C has also been found to decrease hyperpigmentation, although a study in the International Journal of Dermatology found that 4% hydroquinone was more effective in treating melasma than vitamin C as L-ascorbic acid. However, a separate study, also in the International Journal of Dermatology, found that combination therapy of 4% hydroquinone, vitamin C, vitamin E, and 10% glycolic acid was effective in treating signs of hyperpigmentation.
Vitamin E is naturally produced in sites rich in sebaceous glands, as it is physiologically delivered to the surface via secretion of sebum, according to this article in the journal Skin Pharmacology and Physiology. According to a second research study, this study by Packer and Valacchi, vitamin E may be the predominant natural antioxidant both in murine and human skin, and it shows a characteristic gradient with lower levels towards the outer stratum corneum layers.
How to Incorporate Your Best Face Control into Your Skin Care Regimen
Many women experience a “tipping point” in their aging process, typically between the ages of 45 and 54, when their skin aging suddenly accelerates over the course of 6-12 months. Sometimes this is due to external stress, such as a divorce, loss of a loved one, or stress at work. At other times, this is due to the hormonal changes of menopause. And sometimes, it is due to a combination of both kinds of factors. No matter what, this “tipping point” can cause you to notice more wrinkles, fine lines, and loose, hanging skin than ever before.
If you are noticing your skin undergoing these changes (or starting to), Your Best Face Control is perfect for use. The best time to use Your Best Face Control is after a concentrated vitamin C and E serum in the morning, and before a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen. It is also acceptable for nightly use after a concentrated retinoid or alpha hydroxy acid treatment. The high concentration of blended peptides should really make a dramatic difference in your skin.
Your Best Face Control is an awesome product with many of the ingredients that I think are amazing for skin that is starting to really show years of cumulative sun damage and stress. It is one of my all-time favorites. Product Rating: 9/10 (High or optimized concentration of proven-effective ingredients: 3/3. Unique formulation or new technology: 3/3. Value: 3/3. Sunscreen: 0/1).
