Product Review: Derma E Lip Repair Crème

Reviews, Skin Care
Lips are some of the most delicate skin on the body and need special products too, like Derma E Lip Repair Creme.

Lips need attention and sometimes we forget to give that to them. Just like the skin on our face, lips need attention and protection. A product with antioxidants can help undo some of the damage done by free radicals and the sun and also protect against further damage. A product like Derma E Lip Repair Crème ($10.16, has those things and can help keep lips looking young and supple.

Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium Hyaluronate is the more stable sodium salt form of hyaluronic acid, which is found in all tissues of the human body and gives volume to the skin (Cosmetics and Toiletries, Cosmetic Dermatology). It’s a humectant moisturizer — which means it attracts moisture from the atmosphere — that works well in both high and low humidity (Marmur). It can bind water up to 1000 times its volume (Brandt). One study found that patients undergoing radiotherapy benefitted from a cream containing hyaluronic acid — it lessened skin reactions and sped up healing time (Radiotherapy and Oncology). Another study in rats also found that hyaluronic acid sped up healing time from free radical damage — though the study called for further testing (International Journal of Tissue Reactions).

Green Tea Extract

Green tea is one of the most common beauty ingredients because of its high antioxidant activity. It contains a lot of the polyphenol EGCG, which has been shown to be a free-radical scavenger and anti-carcinogen. In one study using mice exposed to UVB-irradiation for 18 and 20 weeks it actually decreased the number of tumors by 66 and 55%, respectively (Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology). Other studies have found photoprotective and potential anti-carcinogenic benefits (Current Drug Targets). One study found that it thickened skin and increased normal cell growth while decreasing the proliferation of squamous carcinoma cells (The Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology).

Vitamin E

Vitamin E, along with vitamin A can absorb some of the most damaging rays from the sun. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Vitamin E is one of the best possible natural  antioxidants you can use to protect against environmental damage and UV-exposure (Skin Pharmacology and Applied Skin Physiology). It has an environmental protection factor of 80, topped only by idebenone at 95 (coffee berry, which has more protective ability than both of these was not included) (Cosmetic Dermatology). Vitamin E also protects against matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) mRNA, which degrades collagen. In this way, it’s a collagen protector (Free Radical Biology and Medicine). Combined with vitamin A (also found in this), the pair absorbs some of the most damaging UV-light on the spectrum (Skin Pharmacology and Physiology).

Personal Use and Opinion

Derma E Lip Creme has a more lotion-like consistency than other lip products, and it has a conditioning feeling when applied.

I was surprised when I squeezed Derma E Lip Repair Crème out of the tube to find that it’s actually cream consistency. Silly as that sounds it seemed strange at first to massage something like a face or body lotion onto my lips. Rubbing it in felt different from using regular balm — almost a conditioning sensation I wasn’t used to. And there’s not really any scent. I used it at night, as that’s when skin repairs itself and antioxidants are most beneficial, and went to bed without putting on my normal balm. The next morning my lips felt softer than they normally do. When I slicked on my lip balm for the day I could feel that they were smoother. I’d definitely use this again and I think that layered with lip balms it could really serve as a boon for people who get dry lips in winter.

Bottom Line

Beautiful lips.

There are a lot of great ingredients in Derma E Lip Repair Crème beyond what I’ve talked about here. Shea butter, coconut oil, and vitamin A are also super beneficial to skin and it’s great to have a product dedicated to the heal of delicate lip skin. It’s sometimes that seems better used at night — particularly since it doesn’t have SPF — but it could also be layered until a lip balm with SPF for silky, smooth lips. As winter approaches, the extra attention from this cream will be beneficial for a lot of people.

  • @Jessica – Great! So glad you liked the post! Let us know how the DermaE Lip Repair works for you too 🙂

Where did you find the info about the hyaluronic acid btw? That sounds fascinating, and it makes sense, given that hyaluronic acid binds 1000 times its weight in water but would need to be surrounded by water in the first place to have this effect!

  • I’m definitely going to grab this the next time I’m at my local Ulta- as part of my normal lip routine, I like to apply a cream moistruzer to my lips at night, and then seal it in with a heavy occlusive (I like Aquaphor). This looks like a great option.

I’m glad you mentioned the coconut oil and shea at the bottom though. I adore hyaluronic acid, but have recently learned that it’s essential that it be combined with other emollients, else it can actually pull the moisture from the deeper layers of the skin in it’s quest to attract moisture. Still one of my favorite ingredients- can’t wait to try this cream!
