I probably don’t need to remind you that it’s starting to get cold out, right? And I DEFINITELY don’t need to remind you that with the colder weather comes the dry, irritated skin, huh? So we are going to skip all that and get right to the point. You need something hydrating as heck! Enter the HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator from SkinMedica.
This hydrating serum contains five forms of hyaluronic acid which they claim provides eight hours of continuous hydration. It also works as a hydrating primer for makeup and is often used on models during fashion week. The website Byrdie spoke with dermatologist Dr. Sabrina Fabi about what sets SkinMedica HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator apart from the rest. “Many patients are surprised to learn there’s a difference between moisturization and hydration—moisturization is the process of skin feeling hydrated, while hydration increases the water level in the skin. And it’s the addition of water that helps to combat signs of aging. It’s rare to find a topical skincare treatment that delivers immediate smoothing results that patients can see as well as improved skin health for enhanced results overtime.”
Used on supermodels, dermatologist seal of approval, what could be better? Let’s take a look:
Grape Flower Cell Extract
Obviously, the star of the show here is the hyaluronic acid. I don’t want to spend too much time on that as I have written about it extensively here on the site over the years. If you need a refresher, here are my posts about hyaluronic acid.
One ingredient we have not discussed as much here on FutureDerm is grape flower cell extract, which is a featured ingredient in the SkinMedica HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator. Otherwise known as vitis vinifera, this is essentially a concentrate made of stem cells harvested from a grape. There are two main types of stem cells found in plants, humans, and animals: embryonic and adult. Grape stem cells are embryonic in nature, which means that they are capable of changing into any type of cell found in the host. Because of this it is believed that grape flower cell extracts help to heal aged, sun-damaged skin. Grape skins and grape seeds also contain phenolic compounds like anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, and antioxidants. These compounds help to stabilize collagen, maintain elastin, and reduce swelling while also helping to repair UV damage.
Plant stem cells have become very popular in skincare products as they can stimulate better cell turnover, which helps lead to more youthful skin cells at the surface of the skin, dermatologist Dr. Ava Shamban writes in a blog post for Dermstore. “Plant stem cells have a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect, helping to protect against sun damage and prevent wrinkles, according to dermatologist Dr. Sonoa Au. There is also evidence that stem cells can promote the production of new collagen, which can also make your skin appear more youthful.”
So basically, other than the boost of hydration you’re going to get from the hyaluronic acid, the grape flower cell extract in this formula will help to heal and repair your skin.
Personal Use and Opinion
The SkinMedica HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator has a gel consistency with no added dyes or fragrances. At first, it felt like one of those pore-filling silicone primers but once you start patting it in it absorbs right away without sitting on the top of your skin. I apply this product both day and night before using a moisturizer or SPF. My skin felt smooth and hydrated but I wasn’t really… wowed by the results. At $120 I was left wanting much more than I got, and I think there are hyaluronic acid serums on the market that work just as well as this for half the price. If you’re someone with mature, very dry skin, this might work better for you, but I’d say for anyone who is under 40 and has normal to oily skin, skip this one.
If you are someone with mature or very dry skin give this one a try. If you’re younger and don’t have extremely dry skin this isn’t a must-have for you. There are a lot of really high-quality hydrating serums on the market that perform similarly for half the price of this. Don’t feel bad about shopping elsewhere, and use that money to invest in powerful serums and treatments!
