Sunday Riley Flash Fix Kit: Good Genes + Ceramic Slip Review

Reviews, Skin Care

I feel like I have two types of readers: The first type is like me — total skin care fanatics. As in, they want the best ingredients, in the most optimal concentrations, in delivery systems (i.e., pH levels, microencapsulated, with good absorption) that actually work.

The second type is more condition-based — they want a product that is going to deal with their skin issues, so they don’t have to. (I imagine these folks feel the same way about skin care I do about hair care, I just want to use something fast and be done and have it look decent).

For the second type of folks, the Sunday Riley Flash Fix Kit, including best-sellers Sunday Riley Good Genes and Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip, may be a godsend. If you’re experiencing signs of aging, including dullness, dryness, age spots, fine lines, and wrinkles, this set is pretty solid. The Sunday Riley Good Genes Lactic Acid Treatment is great because it contains both lactic acid and licorice. A popular alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), lactic acid has smoothing abilities are similar to that of glycolic acid. However, the advantage to lactic acid is that it does not temporarily thin the skin like glycolic acid does, according to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. This is particularly useful during the summer months, when UV rays are the strongest. Granted, glycolic acid is smaller molecularly and penetrates the skin better, and it will increase skin thickness over time, while lactic acid will not (source), but I personally choose lactic acid over glycolic acid and other agents that thin the skin – even temporarily – during the spring and summer months, or any time I’m incurring more UV exposure.

.Sunday Riley Good Genes Lactic Acid Treatment is also great because it contains licorice extract. Licorice root extract, scientifically known as Glycyrrhiza glabra L., is primarily used to help to prevent and treat age spots in skin care (Dermatologic Surgery). It’s also been used to treat eczema, dermatitis, cysts and pruritis. A study in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment showed it to be an effective agent for the treatment of atopic dermatitis. Licorice root extract has also been used in skincare as a method of improving moisture retention and as a histamine and vasodilator. It’s used as an anti-inflammatory for subacute and chronic dermatoses and to treat other chronic conditions like contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis.

On the other hand, using the Sunday Riley Good Genes Lactic Acid Treatment in conjunction with the Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Clay Cleanser is helpful if you have clogged pores, oily skin, or a loss of overall radiance and tone. The inclusion of two types of clay — French green clay and Moroccan Rhassoul Clay — helps to remove impurities and purify the skin. What makes Rhassoul clay different from other clays is the clay’s mineral make up. The Moroccan clay is made mostly of stevensite, which is said to be an anti-irritant. The clay also has anti-inflammatory properties, making it suitable for most skin types (but as always, be careful because no matter a product’s claims — natural or synthetic — irritation is always a possibility). However, keep in mind, there are very few studies to back up this claim.

The clay’s high mineral content, including silica and magnesium, also adds to its benefits. The clay is rich in silica (about 58%), which promotes healthy skin and hair, and is also essential in collagen production (Letters to Nature). After maturation around age 21, skin loses about 1% of its collagen ever year.

The clay’s composition also includes a large amount of magnesium (about 25.2%). On a surface level, magnesium salts help to repair damaged skin, even working to strengthen the skin barrier (International Journal of Cosmetic Science). They also help to soothe irritation. While you can’t get all the magnesium you need through your skin, your skin does absorb it to some extent to the lower layers of skin where it has the same repairing capabilities.

So, when used together, the Sunday Riley Flash Fix Kit is a really nice “fast fix” solution for mild to moderate dullness, dryness, age spots, fine lines, and wrinkles. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a one-two solution for these first signs of aging, except for those with the most dry skin. If you have exceptionally dry skin, I would recommend only the Sunday Riley Good Genes All-in-One Lactic Acid Treatment, and would recommend skipping the Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Clay Cleanser. But for normal to oily skin types, the Sunday Riley Flash Fix Kit altogether is very solid.
