The Top 5 Skin Care Trends to Watch for in 2009

Share Article

HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🙂 I am super ecstatic about this upcoming year. And what better way to kick it off than with a sneak peek into what’s coming up in the world of skin care and dermatology?

1. Better priced skin care.

With the economy in flux, beauty companies are experiencing increases in the sales of lower-priced products, like lipstick and lip balm, while luxury skin care systems are often collecting dust on the shelves. Fortunately for the consumer, this means that companies will entice you to buy with 2-for-1 packaging and less price increases on skin care. One great deal right now: the new Olay ProX Professional 3-piece Starter Kit (pictured; $61.50, Wal-Mart.com) with a full-size eye treatment, day cream, and night cream.

2. Eyelash growth treatments galore.

According to the November 2008 issue of Elle magazine, “Eyelashes are the new breasts…all of a sudden, every woman wants a bigger, fuller pair.” Although that may be a bit extreme (did you ever catch a guy staring at your eyelashes?!), it is true that eyelashes are all the rage nowadays. And, according to recent news in Scientific American, the FDA has greenlighted bimatoprost (a known hair growth stimulant) in the new eyelash treatment Latisse, which is to hit physicians’ offices in early 2009. Latisse, manufactured by Allergan, will cost $120 for a one-month, once-per-day supply, and sales are forecasted to be as high as $30 million in 2009, growing to $310 million in 2012. One patient’s results from the treatment are shown above.

But before you run out and buy Latisse, I will tell you, I have been using the new formulation of Jan Marini Eyelash Conditioner (without bimatoprost) for two weeks, and I have been experiencing very good results. As Jan Marini Eyelash Conditioner lasts for 2-3 months (2-3 times as long as Latisse), and is currently $87.75 through Amazon.com, it may be a good idea to try Jan Marini Eyelash Conditioner before Latisse, particularly if cost is a concern. I will do a more in-depth piece covering both eyelash treatments soon. 🙂

3. Even more celebrity-induced products.

Based on the success of Jane Seymour’s own namesake line and Courtney Cox for Kinerase, look for even more celebrity-induced lines. Two to watch for: Heidi Klum’s In an Instant line, with a high concentration of silicone-based fillers to temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and Cindy Crawford’s Meaningful Beauty, which has an especially promising kaolin (clay)-based Facial Masque.

4. More do-it-yourself versions of dermatological systems.

First it was at-home watered-down glycolic peels and microdermabrasion systems, now it’s do-it-yourself laser and light treatments. One example: NuLase At Home Light and Laser Therapy ($149.95, Amazon.com), which claims to reduce the appearance of acne, increase collagen production, and prevent signs of aging. Unfortunately, any at-home system has many times less the amount of light pulsation (and hence efficacy) of professional treatments. Furthermore, while numerous studies validate the efficacy of professionally-administered treatments, at-home systems are seldom subject to such unbiased scrutiny. My opinion: use sunscreen during the day and retinol at night, stay out of the sun, take a vitamin D supplement, and save your money for a professional treatment from a board-certified dermatologist.

5. Even more organic and all-natural products.

Although I have written a post already stating my belief that organic and all-natural does not necessarily mean better for your skin, I can’t deny that the industry has taken off to awe-inspiring levels. According to one report, organic skin care growth has been outpacing the growth of most other health and beauty industries in the U.S. for the past two years, and is projected to do so through 2009. Whatever the case, look for even more effective all-natural and organic skin care to hit your local grocery store soon.

At any rate, 2009 is sure to be an exciting year in the skin care industry, and I look forward to covering all of the new advances in my blog. Happy New Year to all of my fabulous readers! 🙂
