Oh, supermodels. Current twenty-and-thirtysomethings have the unfortunate experience of growing up in the age of popularity of the mega supermodels, like Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Christi Turlington, Linda Evangelista, and so forth. We grew up admiring their looks, and yet, with an average height of 5’9″ and measurements of 34-24-34 (BMI about 17-18) (source: British Association of Modeling Agents), it’s not only hard to obtain, it can be unhealthy if it is not natural to our body type or if it is obtained in a healthy way.

Here is the diet from popular Victoria’s Secret model Heather Marks:

Breakfast: oatmeal with plain yogurt on top and a side of berries, and a black tea with milk, and then a fresh orange juice. [Approximate calories: 250-350, depending on portion size]

Lunch: sea bass with like a chili pepper on top, chopped; water; a bag of almonds and some green tea. [Approximate calories: 400-500, depending on portion size]

Dinner: a salad from one of their little stands. [Approximate calories: 200-600, depending on the size of the salad] (source: GrubStreet.com)

Total calories: 850-1450

What Science Says about Her Diet

Overall, Heather makes healthy choices, although she needs to be cautioned about her calorie intake. She also wants to make sure that she is getting enough protein: About 50 g daily is recommended for women her age, and her oatmeal and fish only contain about 11 g and 20 g per serving, respectively. I would suggest that she add another source of protein, such as grilled chicken, to her dinner salad.

The oatmeal is a great way to start the day, as it has a low score on the glycemic index, keeping a “full” feeling for longer than foods with white flour or sugar. It is also a great source of fiber and vitamins. The almonds and fish are also an excellent source of omega-3’s, important for heart, brain, and skin function.

It is important that Heather eats enough calories. For a 23-year-old woman of 5’10”, she should be consuming no less than 1800 calories per day – and that’s without exercise. Her diet is best improved with additional servings of fruits and vegetables, as well as another serving of protein.
