What is the Best Leg Hair Removal Product? (Surprise: It’s Under $50!)

Summertime conjures up all sorts of images:  Beaches, blue skies, palm trees.  Unfortunately one image it doesn’t bring up is bear-like hairy legs on the beach, which is likely to be a major part of why the sales of leg hair removal products skyrocket at this time of the year.

Luckily, there is one product I know that removes hair for days at a time, costs under $50, and makes hair grow back thinner and finer over time:  The Braun SE3170 Silk-épil Soft Perfection ($49.00, Amazon.com).  I’ve been using this product for years, since it was just the Braun SE0001 model or something like that!  I honestly can’t say enough amazing things about it, so I’ll try to organize my thoughts in a list:

  • It’s washable. One thing I hate about razors is that collection of hair in them that takes a long time to remove…ew.  (If I wanted to spend that much time on this, I’d be getting laser hair removal!)   But you can brush most of the freshly removed hair from the Braun SE3170 Silk-épil Soft Perfection, as well as rinse it with soapy water after each use.
  • It removes hairs as short as 0.5 mm. I know I sound like a brochure here, but it’s true:  Unlike other epilators, you don’t have to wait 2-3 days between each use.  If you want perfectly smooth legs the day after you use it, if you still have any hair at all, it’s good to go.
  • It’s quick. It takes me less than 10 minutes to use before I get in the shower.  About eight swipes up each leg, and I’m done.  It may take slightly longer to use in the beginning, but it definitely does a long-lasting job in only slightly more time than shaving.
  • It works. As stated above, it really does make your hair grow back more slowly.  If you’re my boyfriend, don’t read this:  I used to shave daily, and now I only have to use the epilator twice/week for the same effect.  Total. Win.

The Only Bad News

It hurts.  It’s not cataclysmic, but it definitely feels like a dozen little pinches of tweezers as it moves along your skin.  If I had to do the medical thing and rate the initial pain on a 1-10 scale, I’d give it a 7.  This takes some getting used to, and I can’t recommend it to anyone with a particularly low pain tolerance.  For instance, I gave mine to my mother to borrow, and she said I was crazy to use this regularly!  But, the irony of her statement is that the pain decreases as you become tolerized to it over time.  Right now, I personally give the pain a 2 on a 1-10 scale; I don’t even feel it anymore.  Granted, I’ve been using it for eight-plus years, but still!

My best recommendation for those with a reasonable pain tolerance is to try it and see for themselves.  Amazon.com has a 30-day money-back policy on this item, as do many fine retailers.  If I had to venture a guess, I would reason 8/10 women buying it would love and keep it.

Bottom Line

If you wish to have silky smooth legs this summer but are pressed for time (and have a reasonable pain tolerance!), definitely go for the Braun SE3170 Silk-épil Soft Perfection.  It’s my go-to product, and after eight years, I wouldn’t even consider another product for hair removal.  Next to laser hair removal, I’d even go so far as to say this is the next best thing!
